Example....
Race Mile 4:30
Practice Mile 4:37
interesting thread. i'm looking forward to seeing any correlation.
5k PB: 4:47 pace
3 mile time trial: 5:07 pace
5 mile Race - 26:30
5 mile Practice - 25:30
1600m race 4:49
1600m practice 4:53,3 months later
no matter how hard i tried, i could almost never race worth a damn.
my best runs were almost always practice
- my 3k PR with my girlfriend on the bike in lane is 10s faster than in a race
- coming back from downtime, i ran a 12 miler on sunday within seconds per mile of the 5k i tanked on saturday. nuts!
wish it was different, but i sucked at racing.
when i was in good shape in college:
race mile: 4:12
practice mile: 4:32
(6-7 months separate from e/o. ran the practice mile in a TT in November. race mile in may. this was 2 years ago).
8k race on Saturday (my last race of xc season), Nov. 8th: 27:30 (converted from short course)
4 mile hard run (roughly 90% of race intensity) that I ran today: 21:17
While the 8k time averages to 5:30 per mile, my 4 mile run averages to 5:19 per mile. I was wearing regular training shoes for the hard training run (after a 4 mile warm up), and felt like I could have kept it going for another mile, possibly two. If it makes a difference, I was warming up against the wind and running hard mostly with the wind. The race on Saturday was pretty windy (It was KCAC).
Race mile: 4:05
Practice mile: 4:19 (4th mile repeat)
400m practice 52.9
race 54.1 (raced a few times)
800m pratice 2:03
race 1:59
mile pratice 4:30
Race 4:21:99
10k practice 34:51 (during a hard tempo run)
never raced
all of my time trial PRs are much faster than my race PRs
3200 time trial: 9:48 (9:15 3k split)
3k race: 9:07
3200 was right at the end of my cross country season, so I was in really good shape. The 3k came the following winter, but I was never really in peak shape over the winter, nor was I focusing on the 3k. Nevertheless, I still tried hard in the 3k, so I was always shocked that I couldn't run faster than 9:07.
600m workout - 1:18ish
800m race - 1:48
You guys are all weird, I race much better than I workout.
Mile race - 4:20
Mile practice (3rd interval) 4:41
Mile time trial - dropped out
3k time trial -9:40
3200 race 9:20
I just can't get myself to try so hard in practice, I can hit my splits but I sure cant go all out
Yea, its called having someone hand time you and give you the benefit of the doubt. Race automatic timing doesnt lie, people do.
Or you just choke.
There is something seriously wrong with your training system if you don't generally race faster than time trial.
The only exception could relate to weather conditions or
race tactics affecting pace.
1500 PR--3.53
1600 practice pr--4:21

400m Practice 53.7 (en route to a 1:08.0 500)
400m Race - 52.9 (Anchor Relay Split
600m Practice 1:27 (in a 2x600 workout)
600m Race 1:25 (en route to an 800)
800m Practice 2:03 (1200-800-400 Workout)
800m Race 1:58 (Same race as that 600...calculate the last 200..)
1200m Practice 3:15 (1200-800-400)
1200m Race 3:16 (en route to 1500)
1500m Practice 4:37 (3xmile workout)
1500m Race 4:04
5000m practice 17:35
5000m race 16:30
I'm not too sure what this shows, other than the fact that I wish I had a race the day I did that 1200-800-400 workout.

I have talked about this here before but I notice that a lot of your PRs come from splits in longer races. My 10K PR is from a the first 10K of a 15K race. I think that it was the race of my life then again I don't think that I ever raced up to my potential in a 10K.
4:39 mile race
4:51 mile practice (3rd rep)
2M race 10:19 enroute to 16:04 5k
2M practice 10:26 (last 2M of 5M tempo)
5k race 16:04
5k practice 16:26 enroute to 5M tempo
4M race 22:16
4M practice 21:17 enroute to 5M tempo
5M race 27:04
5M practice 26:43
I'm on the upswing still and expect to get some big race pr's next year. The mile practice was after track season had ended this year and the 5M practice was prior to a fall marathon this month. What amazes me, though, is the fact that some people never practice particularly fast, yet run amazing race times. When I practice slower, I race slower. For others, the taper is probably to blame one way or the other--too much tapering reduces sharpness, not enough reduces time drops from practice to races because of lack of recovery.
1:59.9 800m in practice
1:59.15 in race
