I thought German would have a good chance to be in the top 10 at the NCAA cross championships this fall, but that was before seeing this video of OSU's Sunday run the day after the Jamboree 8k. Now I feel German will be a strong contender for the Championship. I'm rooting for German and OSU all the way.

German is not going to win nationals this year, guys. He is a great runner, a fantastic talent, and he will likely win one in the future. But not this year.
Between Chelanga and Rupp he will be facing a whole new level of competition. He would have a very difficult time beating either of them.
Top 20? For sure.
Top 5? Possible.
Win? Nope, not this year.
Rupp at his best is maybe 30 seconds faster than Fernandez on the track in a 10k, not THAT much, and hasn't proven to win duels in his career. If he isn't in peak form, Fernandez could beat him.
As for Chelanga, I won't really argue against him. He could run away from the field... we'll just have to see. But what other runners are head and shoulders above German. And if there are none, why couldn't he win?
No one currently college XC can run 4:00.xx and 8:34.xx within hours and then go work at a restaurant.
German can beat anyone in the college scene now, at any given time. He is that damn good.
Also, the Liberty Kenyan ran a fast time on a short course, Paul Short.
Just wondering... is an organized Sunday run, with coach present and videotaped by Flotrack, an NCAA violation?
17.1.6.4 Required Day Off—Playing Season. During the playing season, all countable athletically related
activities (per Bylaw 17.02.1) shall be prohibited during one calendar day per week, except during participation
in one conference and postseason championship and any postseason licensed bowl games or National Invitation
Tournaments, and during participation in NCAA championships.
You must give one day "off" per week, but that doesn't mean it has to be a Sunday. Many schools give the athletes a day off on a recovery day mid-week.

Who said sunday is their day off
you can still host practice.. but you may not require athletes to attend all 7 days... they can still organize with coach 7 days a week- it just cant be mandatory.

You think German could run 28:00?? Based on what?
I apologize... that may be assuming too much. I was simply comparing him and his talent against Galen Rupp's at the same stage. Rupp ran 28:15 in the spring of his freshman season. Fernandez was better than Rupp as a high school senior, and projecting similar improvement one might expect he'll be able to run around 28:00 flat. It's inexact, but if he ends up in 13:18 shape this spring, I'd expect him to be able to run that time if not better. But who knows when you're stepping up in distance.

You would have said the same thing if someone told you he would run 8:34 last year (the year before it happened). I'm not saying he will win. But past races have been proven by him to not be relavent at all. Also didn't he lose last year because he went out to hard or something and faded?

Ummm...ever heard of Evan Jager?
No, enlighten me.
Bob Kennedy...
28 is probably a bit optimistic but something like 28:30-29:00 would be in the realm of reasonable based off his 1600/2mile performances. Throw in another 5 months of training (potentially harder than he had been doing) and maturity and he could be a contender but top 10 is probably a bit more realistic expectation.

no chance. there is no way he will even beat Rupp, never mind anyone else.

He went out pretty hard last year with a few other guys, faded to third over the last mile or so. The two guys that beat him were with him for most of the race, and he never held a lead of any measurable size.
Not that he didn't run well, he just had an off day.
Chris Derrick (Stanford) has 10 times better chance to finsih top 5 than German. Derrick is much more distance oriented(10k). As German is more of a 1500-5k runner
Isn't Rupp the #2 american distance runner, out of and in college?
