Once upon a time the nation of France constructed an aircraft carrier. It was to be the prettiest ship on the seven seas. Then the French Navy launched her and discovered that her propeller assembly was too large and her deck too short for launching and recovering aircraft. This wasn't 50 or 100 years ago, but a couple years back. Hilarity ensued. She also had trouble crossing an ocean once, which was similarly cracking! |

Indeed - and of course ‘French revolutionary ideas’ led to the Terror and Napoleon. All being of British stock - it was hardly the example that those who wrote the Constitution and Bill of Rights would follow - naturally they followed their own precedent of English common law. |

I agree completely (I am American). Whenever I read that I thought about revolutionary war and how France helped us when we were just starting our own country. How people cannot remember that from high school and middle school history just beats me. |

First of all they helped us at the VERY end, and while critical, it was not like they helped us all along. Second they did it to spite the British, not out of noble motives...not a big deal but still a point. Third, we saved their butts TWICE, I think we are more than even...Fourth, if you can't make fun of the french who are we going to make fun of? Canadians? Come on, they are basically french....France it is! |

what's wrong with you people? the 4x100 last night was a tremendous race with superlative performances all around--eamon sullivan's 'WR' lead-off leg, france with two splits under 47 seconds, lezak's incredible finish, .08 seconds separating the top two teams at the finish, 5 teams breaking the world record,... Are we not fans of sport on this message board? Are we incapable of being enthralled by inspiring performances? the US team beating France does nothing to show that we are the better country, nor should it. similarly, this is no longer the cold war, and beating the Russians and the Chinese does not exemplify the triumph of capitalism over communism. last night's race was sport at it's finest and most pure: talented, dedicated athletes doing what they do best. And it was a damn great race. Aren't we mature enough to appreciate it for that alone? |

I was jumping up and down in the final 25 meters, and lost it, laughing hysterically when the announcer yelled out "WHO'S TALKING NOW!?!?" Hahaha great race. GO USA! |

You are a reasonable and rational person who makes valid and logical points. Unfortunately, that means nobody on this board will take you serious. Its not worth time your time to post here. |

Uh, no. This whole thing reminded me of Gary Hall Jr.'s contrived quote about "smashing the Australians like a guitar" during the 2000 games. Watching the Aussies celebrate and play the air guitar at Hall's expense was great theater. The problem with great theater in sports is that it can come back to bite you as Hall came to find out. The Aussies also witnessed the US team coming back to trounce them in their own pool after that relay, maybe a little too much celebrating. Now add the French as the latest casualties. I only hope more people step out into the sunshine and talk some smack because it does add to the excitement, especially at this level. It was a great job USA and everyone else who made it possible, namely the French team. Even though we may make fun of the French as often as possible we can never hate them. They possess one of the greatest cultures on Earth and where would we be without great wine, cheese, mustard, bike races, outrageous accents, et al? |

I agree Hoff choked by not swimming a good strategy and going to early. But the french did not choke. The French swam tremendously. The American's just way out did themselves and did the almost impossible. So i don't consider that choking, i consider that the American's rising up to exceed expectations. |
