GOT ER DONE!!!!!!!
I was up on my feet! What more can the U.S. do? That was like track event. Suspense!!
HELL YEAH BABY!!! Man I'm so pumped that we kicked their ass!!
I just woke up my 3 year old daughter with all my screaming and yelling.
I've never been excited about swimming before.
Best swimming race I've ever seen (not seen many, but that was amazing!!)
"Oh My God" X 500 times!
what is the difference between an open and a relay split in swimming?
no reaction time on the start....so relay splits are faster....it would be like running 100m but the clock starts when you push off the blocks

I'm gonna guess that there's no reaction time in the relay split - the time goes from whenever they start moving...?
Little bit of karma involved in that the French swimmer doing all the talking - Alain Bernard - was the one who choked away their lead on the last leg.
how is there no reaction time? you wait for the guy ahead you to touch the wall. when you see him hit the wall, you react and then jump. if you react slowly, then you don't start right away. you are assuming an instantaneous reaction, which is not correct.

But, unlike a track relay, the athletes have to swim 100m.
You can still time from the first movement from the board.
And since Phelps effort was first, with the "gun" his A.R. is actually legit.
YES! I also woke up the entire house. Patriotism consumes me.
hahah the frenchie turned to look at him as the american passed him...lol "oh $#!$"
It's always a good day when you can SMASH not only a world record, but also the French in the process.
cheech, you dont wait for him to touch the wall then jump... you time the dive so that while you are fulling extended (mid-dive) your tippy toes are still barely on the blocks as your teammate touches the wall.

A swimmer may start moving/their dive before the other swimmer touches the wall. However, the swimmer that is entering the water must still be touching the block (with their feet) until the other swimmer touches the wall. Thus, the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th swimmers get a 'moving start' to their relay legs. This is why you see faster split times (in general) for swimmers that are not starting the relay off.

No, you just can't *leave the block* before the touch. Watch the other relays: they're moving before the incoming swimmer touches.
Glorious. I started impromptu USA and F*** France chants even though I was home alone. That's the most fired-up I've been about a sporting competition since the Celtics' Game 4 comeback. Am I the only one wishing that the 4x1 Jamaican anchor (Powell?) talks crap before the final, and then gets run down.
