yeah, send the kid out to Bangkok and fill him up with some curries and wash it down with some of that local tap water. I am sure Galen would dig eating stinky beans and crunching crab shells for the extra calcium. Or maybe it is a better idea to keep him in the US where he can drink from a water fountain, eat fresh vegtables and even get a mosquito bite without ending up in the hospital. He is young and it is his first Olympics. Maybe after the next four years of competing internationally, he will be used to spending time in other parts of the world. But for now, the smart thing to do is to keep him comfortable in the US as long as possible before going to China. And yes, Houston is 45 mi from the Gulf of Mexico, has consitent high heat and humidity in July, has marked running trails and Olympic team experienced physios (like Salazar isn't going to bring his own people with him). |

You are correct, I have not been here long at all, but exposure to the OP's "quirks" and filthy habits, ya got me there. Me confused? Who puts ones quirks and filthy habits on a running website for all to see and are you being serious or just joking around with the guy? Is he not who he says he is? |

I am what I am, a runner who cares about other runners. I am just like you, I train hard, I get hurt and I try my best. I am just saying that there might be better strategic options out there than Houston. |

Who is noone? What was he doing in the park and what does he have to do with Rupp? |

Houston is a good place for him to acclimate, a few days there will help before he heads overseas. I feel for anyone who lives and trains there full time though... Wejo had it right..if the conditions in Beijing are akin to Houston...the Games shouldn't be awarded to cities with that sort of climate..because in essence its really just a cash cow and a way for them to build new infrastructure |

at least he's not in Maine or Alaska look on the bright side there are worse places for him to be |

Their Endocrinologist is located in Houston. |

I don't understand what "better strategic options there are" now that it's come out that houstons conditions are as similar to beijings as you will find hot...humid...and polluted...where do you feel is a better strategic option and why? |

Bangkok. Kuala Lumpur. Singapore. Shanghai. Okayama or Fukuoka. (The Dutch team is going to Fukuoka). |

The statement above disqualifies you to give advice to anyone for 3 months. Your ignorance of Houston's climate alone means you have no credibility. |

if i remember correctly, alberto went to florida and texas to prepare for the LA games. that was worth the effort? did alberto learn anything? oh yeah, joan benoit, pete pfitzinger, john treacy and charlie spedding all trained in new england where they lived at that point of their careers. |

They should be in Bloomington Indiana..that's the town that is closest in approximation to the weather in Bejing..... |

Oh Yes, heat acclimatization did nothing for Meb or Deena either in 2004 The will to win means nothing without the will to PREPAIR. |

I think, however, it is MUCH more important that they "PREPARE" as it makes more sense. As for Jason, I am sure that Rupp appreciates your concern. After all, it is not everyday that someone who can't seem to pull it together when the race matters (see Olympic Trials) would offer such selfless advice to someone who is already more accomploshed than you. |

I would say Houston is fine in terms of prepping for conditions, but I would want to be somewhere close to Beijing as to not get raped by time diff. |

Mayeroff, do you live in an air conditioned apartment? One thing that bothers me is all this talk of running in heavy clothing. Heat acclimatization is something that should go on 24 hours per day. So you need to be in a warm and humid climate *and* turn off the AC, or at a minimum, keep the AC at a warm setting. I'm a Ritz fan, but I think he'll tank. He's not doing enough adjustment to the heat. |

An excellent point. Once again it begs the question of why the Salazar athletes have to go to Houston to get hypothyroid syndromes diagnosed when any endocrinologist anywhere could diagnose the problem. Also, if USATF/IAAF/IOC etc will not allow an athlete with a disability (such as the guy with the mechanical legs who is a really fast sprinter and has sued to compete, which the various controlling authorities have been fighting because of an unfair advatage) to compete against "normal" athletes why do they allow athletes with "diagnosed" things such as asthma or hypothyroidism (which could also be defined as disabilities) where the allowed drugs may provide an advantage not available to athletes who have not had these diseases "diagnosed". Perhaps the Salazar athletes should be competing in the paralymipics or the Tour de France. |
