the article says that any ego in Rupp is well hidden. Yea Right. Galen Rupps ego is about as well hidden as the great wall of China.

Have you ever seen the great wall before?
What goes on in the altitude tent, stays in the altitude tent.
I, myself, think the article was a better perception of him. He seems levelheaded. No one can imagine the pressure he goes through. As a college runner, if I get a stress fracture, I'm in trouble, but he is a failure.
The one thing I disagree in is (and yes I feel ALL college runners should be allowed these benefits) is the chamber it talks about. We are all too smart to know he didn't pay for it, they should be more careful and leave things like that out of the press...
Agreed, Ive never had a problem with Rupp as a runner (mostly). He is very talented, and I hope he does well. The problem I have with Rupp is the same as everyone else- the obvious, often times questionable advantages he has over other collegiate athletes, beginning and not ending with his shifty entrance into the NCAA system. The second issue with Rupp is his conduct. The obnoxious celebrating after the 5000 semi, the embarrassing way he conducted himself in the 1st 10k at stanford last year. This article is good, and is enough to root for the kid (though him being American should be enough for any American distance fan to root for him), but he still needs to learn to reel in his excessive douchebaggery, if you will.
Why such a problem with the fact that he has a chance to simulate being at altitude? If you truly have a problem, with that then surely you would agree that any athlete who trains at above sea-level is at an extreme advantage and should be banned from colleged track. I wonder how Mark Whetmore feels about this? What an idiot you are!!

POD
very well done sir
Some of you have to see bwyond your hatred for someone you don't even know. SOme very negative, uncalled for comments have been amde by anonymous cowards.
He did nothing wrong at the trials. I got the impression that he was looking at some local people he knew- and that's just what it was.
The issue is not that he has the tent. The issue is in the means by which he acquired the tent. He may very well have gotten it by perfectly reasonable means, but it is a pretty fair assumption to make that there may have been some questionable Nike involvement. Such is the case for several things in his career thus far.
This is exactly the point. You know nothing about the tent, and who it is available to, etc. but you morons come here assuming he is doing something wrong. Fact is he is totally within the rules, as are the many other athletes who are using the chamber. Are we going to start questioning everyone who uses a nice weight lifting outfit provided by his school? Yes, it is getting pretty obvious that we have a handful of jealous, immature wusses who can't stand it that a guy works his butt off to train and get better.
He seems to have a level head and his mom sounds awesome. I don't like the fact that he's at Oregon but isn't coached by the Oregon coach. He lives in Portland and presumably doesn't do much with the team. Clearly, there is something fishy with Nike, but I'm sure he's not alone in that, just a rare case in NCAA sports that it is a runner...Is this what so-called amatuer athletics is really about?
No, making an assumption that nike played a part in buying him an altitude tent is not a fair assumption. It only seems fair, because of everyone's hatred/jealousy towards him.
Go Abdi
the nike altitude house, the nike antigravity treadmill, the nike facilities, nike physical therapist, nike massage therapist, custom nike shoes, nike altitude camp in utah...the list goes on and on...these are all NCAA infractions since UofO does not own them.
You, like the rest of the "Violations Police" should start identifying yourselves instead of hiding behind moma's skirts here on an internet board. Your post is so typical of the childish crap that goes on at this board. Jealous of Galen and his work ethic and accomplishments? Just admit it and move on.
Agreed.
I have to say that after watching an interview with Galen where he said something like "Yea, I know there are haters. There are people who will hate on basically anything. I just try to ignore it and move on.", he shows a lot more maturity than the rest of you 40 year olds living in your parents basements. He has accomplished way more than the rest of you and deserves to be on the Olympic team.
Dude you can go to the Colorado Altitude Training website and buy a tent yourself! They are about 10-15k for the nicest. You can even put it on a payment plan. Maybe his parents skipped out on buying him a nice car and spent it on the tent, so what? Maybe he has inheritence from a grandparent supporting him. Its not that outrageous.
Regardless of how it was paid for, I'm sure Galen believes it is a solid investment in a possible contract with ANY shoe company (although it will clearly be with Nike).
Its not such a big f'n deal. Not that outrageous at all.

Did you have a problem with Abdi's celebrating after winning the 10k? Just curious...
i would have more respect if he admitted that he was pro instead of claiming he is still a collegiate athlete...it is all a nike alberto facade
