Shannon Rowbury Sub 4 in Paris? 7/9/2008 1:29PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
Shannon's running an 800 this Sunday in Italy and then the 1500 next Friday in Paris.

Personally I think she'll go sub 4. Anyone else agree?

YESSS, finally a thread that won't be deleted because a mod made it!

I like how some of the "I support Lomong and Manzano" and "I support Lagat" threads got deleted.

That said, Rowbury 3:59!

I'd love to see it, but the reality is that the first European race, being this close to the trials, may not be her best effort for the summer. It's tough to come down emotionally from the trials, regroup, travel to Europe, adjust to the time change, etc., and rip off a good one the first time out.

It will be her second race and I think she will do it.

Agreed Ruth. I don't want to say that 4:01 was a fluke but who knows? She is very fit but how long is she going to hold that from May when she ran that time? If that 4:01 was on the way to get her where she is really going to be this summer I would be very suprised. I just can't think of anyone else dumping that much time in one year AND going sub 4 to boot. That is extremely difficult to do, just ask Ruth.

I think she'll go around 3:58.5-3:59.0. She's looked so good this year and hasn't even hit her best yet. She crushed everyone at the Trials with ease, so another week or two and a nice 800m tune-up...she'll be ready.

I'm not saying she isn't capable of going sub-4:00, but I don't think it will happen in Paris. Also, personally, I'd like to see her go sub-2:00 for 800 before I get excited about the sub-4:00 prospects. The 61 last lap at the Trials, solo, is a good sign to me. The big thing is that you can't force it to happen. If you're in the right race and compete, it will come. Dwight Stones called them "Hoover" races, where you get sucked along. When I ran 4:00, I didn't hear a single split, nor did I care on that day. I ran the race, trying to be in the top 3 for the Olympic team.

Thanks for chiming in, Ruth. I am sure you already know this, but if you run times that are "slow" then you'll be charged with sucking, but if you've run times that are "fast" then you'll be criticized as a self-promoter. I'd rather be in the latter group (smile).

Anyway, I appreciated you giving a frame of reference for when and how you ran well. It does seem to be an advantage for those that reach the very highest echelons at the Euro meets... that there are whole packs vying for similar times. Of course, they can get strung out like most other races, but it seems that they do so less. Anyway, your stellar times are what they are... I'm not seeing it as self-promotion in the least. I wish more runners who have exceptional experience would post, but I can see why they wouldn't due to the warm welcome they would all be sure to receive.

ruth wysocki's time of 4:00.18 is the 92nd fastest womens time in history the 92nd fastest 1500 by a man is 3:32.84 that in my view is what the time is worth and my wild guess is the anonymous poster calling himself ????whaT? run slower than 3:32.84 for 1500.

back to the subject yes since rowbury has already run 4:01 for 1500 it is easily possible for someone to go from 4:01 to under 4:00 for 1500 especially since women have run it in 3:50.46 so there is no mental barrier like the one bannister had to overcome when he broke 4 minutes for the mile.

Ruth

No need to defend yourself.

We know you are bonafide experienced runner. You have been to the show. This guy hasn't. I don't know you either but I know you by reputation and self promotion is not your style.
