Based on the lastest update on the Status of Entries page on USATF.org, it looks like they are sticking with 24 for the men's 5k. Two prelims of 12 each, to a final with 16 people (I am assuming 16, since that is what they did in 2004). There were only 28 declared. Kinda sucks for those 4 guys, but at the same time, they likely would not have been factors. But it does seem a little odd that 16 are OK for the final, but 14 are too many for a prelim? |

Minimum field sizes of 30 in the M & W 800m as well. With 8 lanes on the track, wouldn't 4 heats of 8 for 32 make more sense? |

and of course any 1500 heat with more than 10 (usatf field size of 30/ 3 heats=.....) is obviously too many....oh wait, they'll have 12 in the semi's and final. apparently someone at usatf can't add or something like that. |

What gives you that sense? I would assume that the 4 with "pending" status are still in the running, if not Mr. Furst (aka "Twentynunth"). |

Billy Mills wasnt suppose to be a factor also. |

I also thought one reason was to simulate the olympics by having heats and a final. So even though they are only going to eliminate 8 guys here, there is a reason for doing it this way. |

Yes, that's the reason, but I think you miss his point., that they could've let more people into the heats... it doesn't make sense to have smaller fields in round one than in the final. |

Has anyone looked at the start lists for the 5K heats? The first heat is stacked compared to the second. I guess it doesn't really matter though considering only eight guys won't make the final. |

I was thinking the same thing about heat 1 of the 800. KD, Lomong, Burley and Jonathan Johnson all together. |
