Those of us from the So Cal, Class of 1979, have endured vicariously through Jeff's 8:36 for 29 years now. Wow! I still remember the day Jeff set the record. And now I'll remember today, too, almost in shock as I watched German wrest the record away via live webcast. And I couldn't be happier! Count me as a fan, too! Jeff will always be the best high school distance runner from my generation. But German is now the undisputed king of the 2 mile! Ain't the world of high school track grand!! |

The fact that he didn't do it in a faux two mile removes all doubt. In an all high school field makes his performance even better. Count me among the Fernandez Fanatics. |

The second lap was a 65.... how on earth did this cost German's chance to go sub-8:30? |

1. Amazing run, by an amazing runner 2. Anyone who thinks that Fernandez could have run 4.5 seconds faster had Puskedra not "got in the way" is an idiot 3. To the poster/s who say that this is the 2nd most impressive high school performance behind Webb's 3:53....you must not know much about the shot put 4. Quoting Adam Sandler movies is lame |

Stoned, are you serious? Can you honestly say that Luke was running for second? From what I've read it was Luke P. who "was getting in German's way" on in the first half mile - this led me to two conclusions if this was in fact what he was TRYING to do (a third could be that he didn't mean to take the lead). 1) he felt he could go toe-to-toe with German and beat him with a sub 8:36 time (whether you, me, or any other Monday Morning Quarterback believe it it doesn't matter - he and his coach believed he could go that fast) or 2) Luke KNEW (as many other people had suggested) that the only way for him to beat German for a NATIONAL TITLE was to outkick him off a slower pace than national record pace. Is it that hard to believe that the "also-favorite" (if there could be one for this race) thought he had a chance to win - and would sacrifice a national record attempt if necessary? |

Are you people really that ignorant when it comes to pacing? Puskedra was not running much faster at any point of the race than would be expected. A 2:10 half is 8:40 pace and he ran 8:47. This is better pacing than 99% of all high school runners. German was very smart to go out in 4:19. Going out in 4:16 may have put him over the edge and cost him the record. Based on his splits, I doubt German could run any faster. He ran a fantastic race. |

Pete: I wasn't there in 1979, but I was there tonight. It was just an unbelievable run. His 6th and 7th laps were totally ridiculous. Wow. |

Hey announcer, it was so unfortunate you had to SCREAM, I mean SCREAM at the crowd for the last 3-4 laps of the race. No problem in getting excited at record prospects, but plesae have some self respect for yourself and the fans. Your freaking voice will unfortunately live in infamy when people watch this video 100 years from now. You know, the Brits get an awful lot of criticism for being stuffy and having no personality, but I think its clear that they are the best in the world at announcing a PROPER sports event, subtle announcing with well timed excitement, be it Wimbledon or track. German's race was great, the announcing not good at all. |

German Fernandez is an assassin, when the scoreboard posted the times they inadvertantly left Puskedra and Lowe off, momentarily everyone scrambled who were watching the feed to figure out what happened to them. Posts went up like crazy, I thought what irony, and posted, "Puskedra and Lowe were taken out by a sniper, named German Fernandez and were laying on the grass at the 300 meter mark in the fetal position" Fernandez is great, to do what he did alone was amazing, i am disappointed that it looked as though Puskedra was trying to slow the pace, I bet fernandez could run 66's all night long. Great job Luke on getting second, Great job Lowe for third, Fernandez, you are not even human...what are those bones made of? |

I am guessing a high school kid once threw a shot a long distance, and that it impressed you more than today's race. Did it go out of the stadium or something? |

Out of the stadium? Doubtful, but as I recall it went 82 feet ... and that qualifies as out of this world! |
