The other thread about the delusional girl made me think about all the times I've seen this happen. There are some really funny stories actually. Here's one of my favorites.
We had this guy show up in town. Originally, he contacted me about getting a scholarship to run on our XC team. He had been in the Navy, had run 1:46, 3:54 mile, etc. Really, too good to be true. I met with him once, heard about how he did 8 x 400 in 48-49 seconds for training, dismissed him as a wacko and went on.
Anyway, fast forward a few years and this guy is still around. Everyone, especially the faster runners in town, just kind of laughed at him as he won all the mile fun runs in just under 5 minutes. Then, one winter, this guy gets a full page article in our local paper about how he's researched it and found that no one has ever run sub-4 in our town and, furthermore, he's gonna be the one to do it. To make things better, he convinced the reporter that he was going to do it for the first mile of a winter XC race, one that has a particluarly steep, though short, hill in the first mile along with very rough footing. The article had all of his "pr's", his Olympic aspirations, everything, except verification. It was reeediculous! Well, we all got a pretty good laugh at that and decided to show up to watch.
Race day arrived. As I remember, it was an afternoon race, over Xmas break. Myself and two really good runners, an OT steeplechaser, call him SD, and a top marathoner, JL, decided to run the race so we could watch our town's first sub-4 mile up close. Before the race, we're on the line, photographers are all around to record the moment for the paper, and our runner, JJ, is talking to the race director. Then he goes about 20 yards behind the line and starts digging starting blocks. What the hell? Sure enough, the race director starts giving this dude a countdown and, about four second frome the start, he starts sprinting full speed and hits the line just as the gun goes off. At this point, we're dying laughing. Somehow we manage to start running and SD, wearing a hand lettered singlet that says, "1:46 my ASS!" on the back, positions himself at the front of the race, in full view of JJ. At about 200m, the course turned right and went sharply uphill. By the top of the hill, 100m later, JJ was done. You could see it in his face. We tried to motivate him, but it was not to be. Our town would have to wait for it's first sub-4. To this day, it still hasn't happened.
JJ, not deterred at all, kept winning all the fun runs and even started traveling to races. I noticed several times he showed up in the results from some elite races like the Miami Mile, running about 4:40, still chasing his dream.
Sorry for the long post. Let's hear your stories.
