I trained with Matthew a few times during his senior year at PC. The kid was an amazing talent, but the coaching he was recieving was laughable. The workouts consisted of 3-4 organized practices a week totalling maybe 30 miles.
When I met Matthew, he had somehow got it in his head that he was a marathon runner. He was training to try to break 3:00 at Myrtle Beach. I was doing mile training and he would join me for some of the interval workouts. With only marathon type speed work, Matthew could easily keep up with me even though I was in 4:20 mile shape. In anything 400M or under, the kid was a beast. It was incredible to watch him fly around the track, easily doing 63-64 for 8x400 and then listen to him talk about trying to run a sub-3 marathon. He needed coaching badly.
Matthew is also one of the nicest guys around. It's great that his coaching finally caught up with his talent.
