Michigan wins Men's Big Ten Meet 5/18/2008 3:21PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
I gotta say I didn't see this coming. After hearing all about how Warhurst has ruined the program and injured all most of his stars, they come through and break the Wisconsin streak. Maybe the Big Ten isn't as strong as it has been, but Michigan had a quite comprehensive list of scorers...suprising especially as they've had little depth in recent years.

The Michigan distance guys (800 through 10K) scored 15. The field events and decathlon scored 38. The sprinters (100, 200, 400, hurdles, relays) scored 76.

Draw you own conclusions on how they won.

Actually, the "stars" for whom Warhurst is responsible in the distance squad (those are the only ones he coaches)--Lex Williams, Mike Woods, Craig Forys--all injured. Great win for Michigan, and credit to Warhurst for recruiting diverse athletes after years of favoring distance guys, but the point stands about running his distance crew into the ground.

I'm definitely right on about him running his distance crew into the ground...the facts are quite evident. But it is worth saying that this is Michigan's first title since '83. So some things have changed around Ann Arbor and something's gotta be said about the meteoric rise of some of their sprinters/field-eventers. Unknowns in HS who are scoring points in college - John Kipf for example.

Great point! I don't think Warhurst gave a shit when Porter won the 110HH a couple of years back... he said it was pretty cool, give me break!!!

To much, Willis, Brannen , Sullivan etc for me!

This is nice start with this win!

You're an idiot.

How does a coach only run selected individual runners into the ground, yet everyone else is fine. Runners get injured, there's nothing new here.

I think people are just frustrated by the fact that Michigan's gotten some incredible distance talent the past few years and many of them are getting injured too often for comfort. A lot of that has to do with coaching and some of it has to do with bad luck.

Lex, woods have both made huge strides under warhurst. It's easy to bash when guys are down. Everyone was bashing Michigan webbs freshman year, and then the next year everyone there ran lights out, and the next few years after.

Also Ellerton made tremendous improvements under warhurst as well as the guys you mentioned. Then there is Switzer who is looking like he might be the next great one.

It's also easy to forget that Broe ran his best times under warhurst, as did mcmullen.

Also forys is not injured. He ran just last weekend going 349 in the 1500 and 153 in the 800. fellows ran 348 which is fantastic for him, O'Lionarid ran 349 which is also a solid time for him.

It's not Michigan's best year distance wise, but things happen.

Yes, he did. And he trained with Warhurst for a while after college, big brain.

Nice try little cat, i think i know what i'm talking about. Mcmullen ran 333 under warhurst after running 336 5 years earlier and stagnated. He then came back to warhurst 3 years later to make the trials, and then retired.
