No bonus for Makau. 13:51 the 1st half 14:28 the 2nd
Makau had a big lead right away...like by 400 meters. No one challenged him
Makau should have kept his mouth shut.... Ritz rules the world
What's with this "the course record is not so hard" bull?! The guy totally dissed Ritz by saying that. Soon he'll be saying he was just out for a "training run" this morning. Yeah RIGHT!
I really don't think it was disrespectful; I bet if Makau had been asked about Ritz specifically, he would have said that Ritz is a great runner. It has always seemed to me like more foreign athletes just say what's on their mind, rather than trying to give the "correct" answer that doesn't hurt anyone's feelings. As things stand, Makau ran one of the best times ever on the course, and if he had gone out a bit more conservatively would have had a pretty good shot at Ritz's CR.
"The 23 year-old Kenyan from Ngong rocketed through the first mile --which is uphill-- in 4:23, instantly opening up a big gap on the field. Makau didn't let up, running the second mile in 4:24 and the third (which includes a significant climb in the north end of the park) in 4:31. By the time he hit the 5-K in 13:51 he was 23 seconds up on Ritzenhein's record."
So Ritz split 14:14/13:54 last year? Nice.
"Makau reached the four mile mark in 18:10 (4:52), and was still 13 seconds up on Ritzenhein's record."
I know this is gnitpicking, but if Makau went through three miles in 13:18, he had to have gone through 5K in either 13:49 or 13:50. Actually, I just realized what a remarkable tool I am for even making such an observation. I apologize, but as I've already hit "Post Message" I can't do a damn thing about it.
Kind of weird for Goumri:
Today: 10 k in 29:51
At London Marathon:
1st 10 k in 29:11
2nd 10 k in 29:47
3rd 10 k in 29:33
4th 10 k in 30:22
Observation . . . am I right? wrote:

I agree to a point. Yes, he could have had a shot, but if he spoke more humbly and ran more humbly, he would have had a better chance. "If he had gone out a bit more conservatively" --- I agree totally............ but he didn't, precisely because he didn't have any respect for it. It wasn't about being PC or hurting anyone's feelings.
It just shows what a beast Ritz is.
Marathoners are an inconsistent bunch. Ryan Hall routinely under performs and shorter races, but shines in the full distance. My guess is Goumri trained through this race. Either that or he has been loading up with higher mileage and little speed.
Idiots like you don't understand the concept of "language barrier." People who speak the same language not only communicate with words but also with the tone and presentation of those words. When you are listening to a non-native english speaker you can't assume that that person is being arrogant or disrespectful based on the what they say. They are just communicating the best they can. Don't be such a dumb ass.
Goumri ran a 2:05:30 like...5 weeks ago. I think if you look at the press conference clips, not even he was sure he'd be ready for this 10k.
Makau is a far better athlete than Ritzenhein, and he's better than Hall as well. His best half is 58:56, making him the fastest half marathoner ever not named Wanjiru or Gebrselassie. He ran four half marathons in 59:19 or faster last year, and has 59:35 this year. He's no slouch. If Ritz can run a 28:08, Makau should be able to run faster.
He's going to try and make the Kenyan team in the 10,000.
Hall has only ran one half...he could beast on one if he focused on it.
Are you guys for real? Makau runs like a lot of Kenyan roadies:they go with their feelings on that morning. And on that morning he felt fearless, felt good and he took off...and screwed up at the end.
If he ran a smarter race, he would have destroyed the CR.

Uh huh, sure. Until then, Makau is better.
