It sucks on the timing cause no american is really gonna go out there and try to even hang on to that (not saying they could hang on to that) cause its to early in the season. They have trials a month away and gotta make that USA team. Its going to be so freaking tough to make that team in the first place.
But hell ya, a WR attempt in the US is going to be great, hopefully some people will turn off baseball to watch something like this

Does Bekele know about circadian rhythm? Most runners run better in the later in the day.
It would be great experience for some of our young guys to rabbit and see how far they can go at a world class pace. Even if they only go 8 or 9 laps it would be a great workout and great preparation for the trials.

Maybe he\'s expecting this to feel like afternoon to his body, seeing as his biological clock is used to a way different time zone.
Personally I am not sure if in his heart of heats Bekele is really going for the WR. Of course, organisers will say he is so that they can max out money with TV contracts etc etc.
Another ploy by Nike and OU to get people to buy tickets...

Gebremariam is in good shape 28:17 in addis is no joke.
Isaac Songok beat Bekele a couple of years back and also ran 12:48. If can manage to return to his 2006 form he could really challenge Bekele. Shaheen is good enough to beat Bekele I think, but he's had injury issues recently and he focuses on the steeple. Augustine Choge is another runner who definitely has the talent to be up there as evidenced by his one-shoed sprint victory in the 3k at Doha. Kipchoge has yet to return to his '03 - '05 form, but if he does then he'll be really tough to beat
Whether Bekele breaks the WR or not, I will guarantee you guys that there will not be another athelete within 200 meters of him - unless it's a lapped one.
Tariku might be the one that will get him through the first 5K - possibly under 13:06. If he successfully acheives that, we'll be seeing a WR by Bekele on US soil.

I have run with the elites in Addis. And yes, they do it very early in the morning, arriving at around 6:30, and their training takes place on the hillsides north of Addis exactly 9, 998 ft high according to my Garmin 305. It's insane how fluidly they run at that altitude.
Everyone is getting excited about a time trial. there is no excitement in such a race, i'd rather see webb's old 3:53 on tape than watch bekele run around in a circle 25 times. at least webb was in a race.
and for the record i am a willis fan not a webb fan

Will it make a difference? Say he runs 26:15 and peaks too soon (which to be honest most African training regimes do not believe or compensate for peaking) and declines in fitness, how much do you expect him to decline by as far as time. Even if he drops 30 seconds he's still in sub-27:00 shape and the number of guys who will be in that type of shape in Beijing can be counted on one hand. On top of that chances are the winning time won't be a sub-27:00 and it will come down to a kick, which in that case 95% of the time Bekele will win in the end.
i wonder if rupp will be interested in running the same race. it'll still be 3-4 weeks from the u.s. trials.
I have surprised that no one has brought up the fact that his 5k SPLIT will probably be faster than the winning time of the meet's open 5k!

I for one, like many many other track fans, am thrilled at the prospect of seeing the fastest 10,000 meters EVER RUN BY A HUMAN BEING, the very history of our sport being shaped before our eyes, in Eugene. he shoud be trying to break the 3k wr, the only remaining viable distance for him to break such
however, maybe coz it's olympic year he wants to get used to his primary distance in peking - the 10k & make sure his endurance is upto scratch - retaining 10k is obviously season priority
perhaps next year concerted attempts at 3k ?
but back in '04 he held no wrs, so obviously a big priority in his life to get them, even in an olympic year
it's 4y later & he's got lot more mileage on the clock & a lot more beat-up ( think mombasa last year, the struggle in osaka & talk about sub-optimal fitness in africa champs recently )
he needs to be a bit more circumspect in his build-up to peking compared to the gung-ho, indestructible youth of '04
