What's to discuss? He's a faster miler and has performed better than Galen. He's ran a sub 28 minute 10k. He hasn't been flown across the country or had a former world class runner as a PRIVATE coach. He hasn't lived in an altitude tent or spent time at the Nike HQ getting treated by the doctors.
GO SCOTT!
its was a 1500 not a mile
He ran a full mile in 3:59 a few weeks ago at the Chico Distance Carnival. The race the day before the 10k was a 1500.
Because he has the most awesome name!!
Say it really fast: SCOTTY BAUHS
!!!
Bauhs has more upside.
His recent improvements have been dramatic. His 5K PR, 13:31, is essentially the same as Galen's (13:30).
Rupp ran 13:38 in 2004, 28:15 in 2005.
wow i've never looked at it like that before, thats pretty damn amazing. man...GO BAUHS
Just because Rupp ran faster than Bauhs in 04 and 05 doesn't mean Bauhs has more upside. It's not like Bauhs is three years younger. Or is he?
Does anyone understand just how good 27:33 is?

No, what it means is that while Rupp has improved 7 seconds in the 5K since 2004, Bauhs has improved over 70!!!!! You can interpret that however you want, but if they race the 5K soon my money is on Bauhs.
Obviously 27:33 is damn good. Never said it wasn't. Never even said that Bauhs is better than Rupp, but I definitely think he will be, sooner rather than later.
scott ran 27:48. do you realize how good that is and how he is constantly improving? honestly talk to some of his teammates, he is improving pretty much every week. next year he could run 27:20. its crazy to think about but this guy will be in contention for the AR in a few years. galen has shown that he can NOT break 4 so many times when set up to and the first time scott tries it he does. he can achieve any goal he goes after and has proved that time and time again. give it some time and he will have pr's that only few americans have achieved before in everything from the mile to the 10k and even the half and marathon if he decides to do one someday.
i think rupp wont improve much more than his current level throughout the remainder of his career. unless he gets some good drugs.
Okay. I see what you are saying. Bauhs is definitely on a roll and I hope he does great things, but just because he is hot now doesn't mean he has more upside. He may very well go on to be better and all that...just sayin.
Wow i'm surprised this thread has gotten as far as it has without any of those annoying Rupp bashers (and with all the publicity on Scotty in recent time, a few Bauhs bashers have emerged as well). But it is extremely difficult to say who is the better athlete since they haven't raced each other. The true test of who the better 10k runner will be at the Olympic trials.
They both have one thing in common and that is they won't make the Olympic team. I had no idea there prs in the 5k were so off the international A or B standard. There are so many superior US runners to talk about here.
Scott Bauhs is a faster miler. Galen Rupp is faster at 10,000 meters. Until Rupp runs 3:59 and Bauhs runs 27:33 that will be the case. It's really not difficult to comprehend.
As much as I admire Bauhs, Rupp is younger and hasn't put in nearly as many miles. I'm not sure you can say Bauhs has more "upside." At some point, there are diminishing returns for every runner. I'd bet that Bauhs is getting close.
rupp is actually 3 months older i believe. not that that really has anything to do with their talent and potential.
Galen ran 13:37 for 5k and a 4:01 mile in HIGH SCHOOL.
What did Scotty run?
Than lets talk about upside.
actually, I think you are wrong on both counts here. I think Scotty is actually a few days younger than Galen (thus they are basically the same age). Also I think Rupp was well known to put in 100+ mpw, even in high school. I think Eric or Gary (or Scotty) could correct me if was wrong, but I don't think Scott touched a 100 mile week until a year or so into his college running career.
I think Galen deserves respect for his marks and the hard work he's put in to achieve them. Likewise I think Scott will continue to develop, and should be credited for his current progression. I think talk of an AR is a bit premature, but there's nothing wrong with aiming high.
