Who would win in a Iron-man triathlon? Craig Mottram or Lance Armstrong
Before going to one testicle lance was already a national triathlon champ. Seems like a no-brainer to me.
Too many factors for real comparison.
Now?, or given time to train (lance for run and mottram for bike).
Can mottram even swim?
Is the course Hilly or flat?
Just a few, but I am sure there are others.
If raced now--Lance on a hilly bike course, definitely; Might be close otherwise.
After ample time to train...probably lance.
Lance could possibly be a decent runner, but he is a beast on a bike.
Mottram hands down. He has come from a triathlon background and would equal lance in the swim and house him on the marathon stage.
pretty sure mottram used to do triathlons too before he picked up running.
lance would destroy mottram either right nor if they trained. lance was a pro in high school helping his mom pay the bills and a world class triathlete in the process. he's coming off a 2:50 boston and a 34+ 10k in central park in the middle of marathon training so he's not a slouch on the run. mottram doesn't bike so he would get killed on the bike and then not have enough time to reel in a not-so-bad lance on the run. i'll give lance the nod on the swim too because he has a background in it and swimming is something that stays with you forever (look at how fast former college swimmers are who are completely out-of-shape and who still are fast). an ironman would be a complete destruction. an oly distance would be closer because the bike would be less of a bloodbath but lance still wins by a mile.
i do think that if mottram trained full-time, he could be a world class triathlete and at some point would take the aging lance (and probably most other pro triathletes).
oops...got mottrom confused with someone else...
..but either way...still lance.
LANCE LANCE LANCE
Mottram was one of the best juniors in triathlon before he started running. He CAN swim and he CAN bike. Lance on the other hand CAN'T run. Seems like a pretty obvious equation to me.
before these asinine comments keep coming through about inability to swim, bike, or run it should be stated that both athletes had highly impressive triathalon resumes before turning to their respective sport. I think lance's career was better though.
mottram did a tri in recent times, cant remember when, but it know he used to do them quite a bit. nevertheless, i think he did pretty well for not being a triathlete, came in maybe 10th for a short course race.
I would honestly go with Lance. Especially an in-shape Lance (Remember right now he runs about 20 miles a week and weighs 20 pounds more than he did when he was a professional athlete. And he still runs 6:30 pace in marathons) ... In an Ironman, the swim is just not that important. Cycling is. Running, sometimes ... Now, in an ITU race, Mottram would stand a better chance.
remember - it is a 112 mile bike. A great cyclist could take an hour out of a good club cyclist over that kind of distance
Mottram won a Tri last year I think. He wanted in the elite section but they wouldn't let him(likely because they thought the pros would be upset if he won).
Obviously it would be very close if they both trained exclusively for it.
Pretty sure they would be about equal in the swim(both shark bait) and I would bet that Mottram could develop biking potential much better than Lance could develop as a runner.

lance used to be a pretty decent runner when he was in highschool/post high school. i'm thinking 30-32 for 10k. so, he can run

Are you out of your f***ing mind?
Armstrong came from a triathlon background as well. Actually he came from a swimming background then a triathlon background. Too much of the IronMan is the bike and Armstrong is a good swimmer. He would have such a massive lead on Mottram by the time the run came around that he could jog it in. Mottram, meanwhile has plenty of speed but nowhere near the endurance for any of that.
Armstrong would finish, be showered and drinking beers before Mottram came in
Buster has bigger balls.
Lance has a bigger bank account.
I've gotta go with Lance on this one. Regular training rides are much longer in cycling than running (6 hours of running in a day is pretty rare for top runners), I think his body's systems are better equipped for it. Then again, he's lost all of that upper-body bulk that would be useful in a swim, so he might get destroyed there.
