Sure, we expected Buster to win in the 10km last night and run a good time, but how many of you expected Guenther to be out there closing strong to finish second? http://gostanford.cstv.com/sports/c-track/stats/2007-2008/pjc_res.html 27:36.46 is a pretty respectable time for a non-African and it was good to see Mr. Weidlinger back and running well after the horrifying faceplant he took into the steeplechase barrier last August at the World Championships in Osaka. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIoLqHrcvIM The video is cleaner and clearer at http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2007/08/26/accident-mars-steelplechase-in-osaka-guenther-weidlinger-fall-v/ I believe his time from yesterday is a PB by more than 45 seconds! |

Osaka was the second time weidlinger fell hard in a major championship. He also hit the barrier on the backstretch of the steeple final at the 2002 european champs. I don't know if the video is available anywhere. |

Wejo wrote a description od Gunther as "tall and gangly guy"... hahaha, nothing can be further from the truth. Wedlinger is barely 5'6" at his best day. Very short and skinny. That of course takes nothing fom his running excellence. I know him since his junior years and I think he has the best potential at longer distances. His 1500m PR is the most amazing, I think, given his relative lack of raw speed. I also remember him running very well on the roads in the late 90's, outkicking some very good Kenyan road specialists (one comes to my mind: Moedlinger Adventslauf- profi run). |

I am going to assume that the OP is using his real name, so this makes the post more credible, but what use is it to discuss and post links to the ugliest moment in Mr. Weidlinger's career? Mr. Weidlinger is now the top runner in Austria, one of the most delightful countries in Europe, and you also fail to mention his stellar run at the World Half Marathon Championships in Udine, Italy, last year. It always appears that one of the central functions of this message board is to tear down every runner, no matter if you are talking about Haile Gebrselassie or some crazy nut living in Thailand. This message board is dysfunctional. Jason |

I remember seeing him at some meet back in 1998 when I was in Germany. I was amazed with this little Austrian kid keeping up the race leaders. |

I don't know, I thought the "it's good to see him back after that accident" part was PRAISE, not criticism. Note the use of the word GOOD. That accident was truly awful and scary; nobody's bashing him for it. He's clearly a fantastic steepler and had a freak accident that could happen to anyone. We're all happy he's better and running well. Given that this thread is titled "Guenther Weidlinger Fan Club," I think you're seriously misreading things. |
