I'm sure most of us have been fortunate enough to survive at least one extremely frightening running-related incident. I sure have. My most recent experience happened this summer. An SUV was coming out of a parking lot ready to turn left onto a busy street as I was running towards it on the sidewalk from its left. I tried to wave and establish eye contact with the driver but couldn't, and rather than slow down I sped up, sidestepping into the four lane street to pass in front of the SUV before it made the turn. Well, I failed to look into the street for traffic, and as I passed in front of the SUV a car flew by me going 55, and I could nearly feel the panel of the car brush the hair on my leg. I couldn't sleep that night.
I know of a few runners, some personally, who were fatally struck by cars (including a girl at my high school a few years back). Every time I hear of a running-related accident I cringe, knowing the same thing could just as easily have happened to me or any of my competitors. I continue to keep those unfortunate ones in my prayers; may they rest in peace.
So what are your stories? Have you had a close call with a car while running? Or the weather? Or another person?
