Sorry, that 27.33 was the most staged time trial I've ever seen, aside from Rupp's various failed attempts at breaking 4. Yes, Rupp did run it and we all know he's fast, but it was no race.

Nice try fanboy.[/quote]

Someone who understands their limits, and paces themselves, understanding how running works and trusting in their ability, has more balls then someone who goes out too hard, ending up hurting their performances.

Then there's the fact Rupp was 20 when he ran his 2733, Pre was 23 when he ran his 2743.

Sorry I should have been clearer, rupp can win a race when it counts. Winning that 2733 race doesn't mean anything, other than he ran 2733. How many NCAA titles does he have? how many USATF titles? I'll even go as far as how many big race did he win in high school?

Looks to me like he had people to help push the pace, whereas Pre rarely had anyone to help out; Pre would lead from gun to finish.

The other thing people keep forgetting is that had Pre ran a 10K at the same age as Galen I'd bet it would be comparable either/both of their times.

The guy won NCAA XC 3 years in a row... Put him on a track, a modern track, at the end of XC season and Little Galen would crumble.

Not fair to run him during XC? The reason Pre didn't run the 10k more often is simple...

Pre = mile/5k
Rupp = 10k/Longer

Best of luck to Galen this season.

Congrats to Wheating! Nicely done.

The day Rupp subs-4:00, it will be with a 3:57 or so... trust me, it will be huge.

And by the way, just shows what a distance phenom Rupp is in that Pre was able to run 3:54 for the Mile and ran 27:40's, while Rupp runs 27:33 for 10,000m

Comparing rupp to what Pre did 35 years ago is just retarded.

Rupp is pretty good by todays college standards, but...
If Pre were to accomplish today what he did then, his 10k time would be *reality* adjusted to more like 26.40 something.

Rupp just isn't in the same league, get over it.

Rupp did make the US World Champs team last year for Osaka, does that count?

I'm not a big Rupp fan (but I still want him to run well and continue to improve), but some people on here just have unrealistic expectations. Winning any race at the NCAA level and above is not only difficult task in itself, but everything has to be clicking on that day. His second to McD at the NCAA XC was a great race, he just got beat by a stronger runner (and very accomplished runner in his own right) that day.

Nice race by Wheating, two rabbits that can do their job makes a big difference. But WTF, the 1500m top heat got screwed big time. The rabbit lasted what 600m and then dropped out. most take you thru 800-1200m. it wasnt fair at all, they needed two solid rabbits and they would have broken 3:40.

Pretty good = 1 fairly fast time.

Really good might be... owning everybody, sort of like pre did.

Some day sooner or later some American kid will come along and stand distance running on it's ear, rupp ain't that guy.

Andy is a real nice guy, congrats to him. He kind of scares me with his talent, he really has only been running for a few years now. I wish him the best of luck in the future.

Pre > Rupp, but give Rupp a break already. His career is still young. When it comes to U.S. 5000 runners, Pre is one of the all-time greats along with Maree, Kennedy, and Schul.

Give Rupp time before you judge where he stands against guys like that.

"Adjusted"?

You old-timers crack me up, as if you ran 50 meters further back then than the guys today. What the hell advantages does Rupp have over Pre? The watch doesn't lie.

It's like saying Jim Ryun would have run a 3:42 if he ran today, just because. Same thing with professional football and basketball players...they just work harder and smarter these days than back in other eras. Get the f*** over it.

And for all of you numnuts talking about Pre's racing savvy, where the hell was it in the Olympics?

Clearly more people care about Rupp vs. Pre than this Wheating kid. Get over it.

what do you want to know? he lives near me in the summer and i have spent a little bit of time with him.

he loves u of o

runs with russell brown (stanford) during time they are both at home. bob edgarton of UNH (1:49, 3:46, 4:04) has been known to join them for a workout. he also lives in the upper valley of NH/Vermont (andy lives just across the river in norwich, vt)

his biography on the u of o website gives good information about him. he only ran 1 year of high school track at kimball union academy in NH, dabbled with XC at kua. played soccer and hoop (he is 6"5" for you who can't tell). he has been advised by good people at KUA and elsewhere.

andy, if you are reading i saw jeff on the rail trail this morning and he is really pleased for you! he is doing well.

and for you pre vs. rupp people--take it else where please. thank you.
