Wheating looks great right now. He totally destroyed a pretty decent field there in the last 200 meters.
Not so good for Rupp. Nice to see Sage on his way back.

jefferson has not looked good at all for the past 3-5 mos.
so i guess the questtion is, how do we judge the success (or lack thereof) of the OTC? great guys for sure, but they don't seem to be putting up the results that one would want to see at the end of apr. can't say "it's early" because its getting close to crunch time when they all are going to need to hit some qualifiers (for sure some already have them) and/or need to show they're ready for the trials. sage i'll give the benefit of the doubt since he's been on the comeback trail so that wasn't too bad but the rest of then at 4:04 and slower doesn't seem to bode well to my way of thinking.

It's early. Maybe not to you Turkey Trot kings, but to competitive runners it's early.
Nice breakthrough for Wheating.
Will Rupp EVER go sub-4????
Sage cracks me up. According to an interiew this winter, a year ago he was out of shape and barely able to run 18:00 for 5K. With Robison on the rebound, Gabe running decent, and Stember still trying, it's interesting to see how the old Stanford milers refuse to give up.
george it's only six weeks until the Q deadline. to me, that's not a lot of time. I'd feel much better knowing things have been squared away instead of chasing times til the last minute. every time i've gone to USA's it's been with at least 6 weeks of open time after my qualifier, if not having one from the year prior. maybe all these guys have one from last year but i doubt it. you know as well as i do that confidence goes much hgher when you can race without pressure in the last few weeks going into the trials rather than knowing that if you don't hit it, you don't go. and yes george, i've won a few turkey trots, and a few thousand in the process.... :)
I've won a few turkey trots. Why not peak for those? Better press coverage.
(sarcasm)(sort of)
OTC isn't any good because a majority of them drink far too much. It's every weekend getting hammered with a majority of these guys. I feel bad for Gags..his coaching is going to be judged by the performance of guys that just don't lead the disciplined lives that are required of high level athletes. Don't get me wrong, a beer here and there is ok, but getting smashed constantly is a different story.

Well why don't we wait til next week to decide. Many of those guys listed are using it as a tuneup for next week's stanford meet i would imagine. We'll get a better picture then.

While not a miler, you have to group Luchini in there making his come back! It must be like a reunion over there every day...and powell is the assistant coach. All we need is for him to make a comeback. Too bad Riley has left...although it's probably what's best for him.
4:12 for Jefferson?? In college he was way faster than other state of Indiana guys like Jordan Fife and Scott Overall, and now he's way slower. I hope he gets it together.
last year he ran dnf in his only april 1500, and then bombed in the mile at the oregon twighlight going 416. He ended up running 341 that year right before nats where he went 342. So there is still some hope for his season based on his history.
Getting smashed worked for Pre, why not for these guys?
Yeah Pre got smashed flat.
The Jeffersons either run a great race, or they seemingly give up when it's not going great. My guess is some replies will attack me being negative. But I think I'm right.
The day Rupp subs-4:00, it will be with a 3:57 or so... trust me, it will be huge.
And by the way, just shows what a distance phenom Rupp is in that Pre was able to run 3:54 for the Mile and ran 27:40's, while Rupp runs 27:33 for 10,000m

Yeah, seriously. This fall he could barely run 15's for 5k, and was just sad. Now he's running 3:44; awesome for him!
I agree that Rupp is built more for the longer stuff, definitely.
Your comparison is pretty bad though. Pre won 3 national championships at 6mi/10k, whatever they ran in XC back then...
No doubt he would have ran close to his best 10k long before he ran 3:54. Granted, he was sub-4 as a Freshman, but that's because he had far greater range than most.
@ 10k, I'd bet on Pre against Rupp on any day of the week.
