Then what is Starbucks?
if i buy it at the counter, i.e. buffet, fast food, etc., with the exception of having baggage checked, because some might consider the kiosk a counter, but baggage checking seems a little more labor intensive than just taking cash out of one's hands

Sonic it depends on how I'm feeling. If the person bringing me my food is either A)hot or B)skating they get a tip. The thing about sonic is that usually I'm just getting a snack or something and I'm not going to tip them in change when I pay with a card, so if I tip $1 that can be as much as 40 percent of what I'm ordering.

The Starbucks tip jar really ticks me off, particularly for the base prices you are paying for a latte.
These Starbucks baristas (coffee makers) act like bartenders.
Is the tip jar ingrained in Starbucks corporate policy?

Yep, it sure is. Big lawsuit a couple of weeks go, where Starbucks got into trouble for letting supervisors (management) share in the daily tips.

Unless you use the bathroom. Then you have to tip a guy whose job is apparently to sit at a table outside of the restroom and collect change.

I don't tip at coffee shops either. I briefly worked in a coffee shop part time. The owner would share equally in the tips when she worked. That really pissed me off.
I'd only tip at a coffee shop if I ordered something that actually required the worker to do something. I usually just get a cup of coffee and a refill or two at my local coffee shop, so I don't feel the need to tip for that. If I order food that they have to heat up and bring to me, I might drop my change in the tip jar.
The problem with the Starbucks system is the location of the tip jar. The jar is usually located at the register, so if you get anything other than regular coffee, you pass the jar before you get your drink. On the rare occasion that I get a cappuccino or something other than regular coffee, I want to see my drink before I decide whether or not to tip. If my cappuccino is half foam, I sure as hell don't want to leave a tip. Since I don't know that this isn't the case as I walk by the jar, I am even less likely to tip.
Buffets - I will tip but never more than 10% and only if the waitperson keeps the beverages full and clears the plates. Not much work for them to do in a buffet
Hookers. They get paid enough and I'll be damned if the pimp shares a cut.

It's illegal for those lazy slobs to accept gratuities.
When I'm with my wife, the waitress usually ignores me and speaks only to my wife including asking her if everything is OK and if she needs anything else, etc. In that case, I ignore the waitress too and dont tip at all.

I'm going to win money in an NCAA pool. How much do I tip the guy that's running the pool. Additionally, I don't know the guy, a friend of his invited me to play in the pool. My winnings will range from $500 to $1500 depending how the final four plays out.
I'm assuming 10%?
