On March 13, 2008 Gatlin performed at Tennessee's NFL pro day. His numbers were as follows: Ran a 4.45 and a 4.42 in the 40. Had a 40 ½-inch vertical jump, 11-foot long jump, 4.4 short shuttle and 7.36 cone drill and 12 reps in the bench press. The former Olympic sprinter faces long odds of getting signed. |

I thought this must be an April Fools joke since there is no way Gatlin would be that slow. But it's true: http://www.nfl.com/draft/story?id=09000d5d8077566a&template=with-video&confirm=true |

That's it?? 4.4? I dont understand why he couldn't run faster.. I mean its fast but /he should be closer to the 4.3 shouldnt he? I mean he's probably taking more drugs now. |

Justin is lanced so he should fit into the NFL just fine. |

While Gatlin's 40 yard dash time isn't all that impressive, considering the fact that he won Olympic Gold in the 100, he probably has better top end speed. The problem is, 40 yard speed is more important in football. I doubt we're going to see Gatlin on any NFL highlight reels. Nice verticle though. |

You are such a tool. Stop making the same lance reference its old and tired. I hate high and mighty gayasses like you. People like you act like your above everything. STOP SAYING LANCED. You Suck. |

The reason he ran 4.4 is because he is no longer lanced. |

He has the WR for the 60m at 6.39. Assuming 0.85 for 40/50 and 50/60 takes you to 4.69. Now take 60% of 0.90, 0.54 down to 4.15. Now take out reaction time of 0.12 to get 4.03. These are for an indoor track, not for running on artificial surface. |

6.39 divided by 60m is .1065 multiply by 40m is 4.26 for the 40m dash. 40m is about 43 yards...or about 2.75 meters. 2.75 x .1065 is .29. 4.26 - .29 is 3.97. 1. He's not coming out of blocks. 2. He's on turf, not the best track surfaces in the world. 4.42 is not a bad time. His problem is probably the lack of strength and agility. He only lifted 225lbs 12 times? That computes to a max of around 320lbs. That's a star high school player, median college player range right there. Alan |

You can't just divide the 60m time. Remember, that a 60m sprint is not 6 equal 10m segments, time-wise. The first 40m are easily the slowest. |

My guess would be that he has bulked up to try to make the NFL, which would explain the slow 40 time. Lots of smallish fast guys do the same thing. |

LSU's Trindon Holliday has run 4.27 in basketball shoes. 4.42 is slow for someone who is relying on speed alone to get signed. |

Isn't he lanced tho, after all he tested positive and is banned by the IAAF, so what's your problem. |

lanced. that's a great term, though technically it is incorrect when used with gatlin. despite overwhelming conjecture and many rumors, lance has never been CAUGHT taking drugs. the new book, from lance to landis is pretty good reading though. |

Damn good read. I wasn't aware that they could detect blood doping by aging the reticulocytes |

That's what I thought, Gatlin IS lanced, everyone knows that. |

I question the usefulness of the 40 yard dash. How many times does anyone run 40 yards in a straight line. To me a better test would be some sort of shuttle run or obstacle type course. I think this is also included but rarely reported. The idea of offensive linemen running 40 yards is even more stupid. |

Actually saying lanced isn't getting old. It's probably one of the better Letsrun slang terms, certainly way better than "thon." |
