all this confirms is that running males should never become runners as they self absorbed and will never have time for anybody else

I have a Track FAN story that's pretty bad:

In 1988 My wife and I flew to New York City from Indy because we received a telephone call that her mother was in her final throes at the nursing home where she was finishing up her life. The second day there, she was still in a declining coma , and I knew that the USATF champs were that evening down at Madison Square Garden. I

asked/told my wife I wanted to/was going to jump on the subway and go to the meet, but would come back right away afterwards.

So I did that, had a GREAT time, and when I got back to the nursing home, she had died about an hour earlier.

Hey tr, you left us all hanging out there. What's the rest of the story??? When was the divorce final, etc.?

My wife went into early labor with our first son on the night of Dec. 16, 1991. The hospital said it was too early to come in. Knowing this sort of thing could go on for ages, I thought I might have trouble getting a run in on the 17th.

We had a friend staying with us to help out, so at midnight I went out to run. I told her that I'd leave the porch light on and run a lap of about a mile and a half around the house, so I'd be passing the house every ten minutes or so. If things changed and we needed to head for the hospital or anything, I told her to turn out the porch light and I'd stop.

I ran nine laps, showered, slept for a few hours, thenw as back up at 6:30 as we headed off to the hospital.

1997. My wife and I went to the hospital at 2:00am after her water broke. at 1pm the next afternoon she was still not having regular contractions. the hospital was across the street from the fieldhouse where we met for practice daily. i ran the 3mile warmup with my guys (wife was fine with it and her sister was also there. I was FREEZING because the AC in the hospital was so cold, she was so hot and i was wearing shorts due to hot, humid midwest summer).

10 years later we're still together. she wasn't technically in labor, though, i guess.

I went out for about an hour run with all of my three children while my wife was in labor. She didn't care at all.

Never went out for a run, but during delivery of our second child her OB/GYNB starts talking to me about how upset he was that ASICS had discontinued his favorite model, and he had even written to the company president to complain. He went on about what I thought might be a good replacement model until my wife, whose contractions were getting intense and frequent at that point, cut in with "Hey, could someone pay attention to me - I'm actually having a baby here."

Never did find out what model he switched to.

Oh, and during delivery of our first, a bunch of kids from the team, one of whom had been a Candy Striper, snuck into the hospital and made it all the way to the maternity ward before I headed them off. They couldn't understand why they couldn't come in and watch the proceedings.

I took the day off when she delivered, but only that day. She wasn't happy about my running the days prior, as it was possible she'd have an early delivery, but I pr'd and it was fine. I got more flack from work for taking my only day off in two years that day--had to fill out paperwork, etc., because I said it was for the birth of my child, rather than that I was sick.

I was obsessed with road races. I was 28 and running good times. One of the better local road races was only 60 miles away and when my wife went into labor about 2am the night before we were timing the contractions and figured I could probably make it to the race and back in time. I chickened out and she didn't have it till 2pm. Oh well. I tell my daughter that story and she always says I can't belive you didn't go.

now after a quick conversation, I think that I may have run while she was in labor, because they told us the day of the scheduled c-section that she was in labor and she had been apparently having contractions since the day before. I came home from work, her parents arrived, and I went for a couple hours run. So, I'm guilty, but didn't know it at the time.

That a man could even contemplate running while his wife was going into labor...the narcissism on this thread is quite breathtaking

I highly doubt I have, though there is the possibility that on a night I don't remember, I married and knocked up a chick and nine months later I was on arun run when it was happening. Oh the little bastard probably came out runnning too. Ha Ha Ha Ha!!!!!!!

Well since you asked, I will tell you no lie... we did indeed get divorced 5 years later for the usual multiplicity of reasons !

I'm a little wasted, but that story cracked me up. Good stuff! His priorities are F'd, but he probably knows that he won't be getting in much good training after the baby is born.

My wife is a runner and reads the board regularly. Her sister also runs. Now, when my wife gets pregnant, which she will be soon, she'll be extremely moody and impossible. She WILL ask me not to go running while she's in labor (GOD DAMMIT). She will also ask her sister to make sure I do not go running while she's in labor. But thats not what I'm mad about, this is a foot in the door effect for her. Now, my running won't matter at all, and will be completely expendable no matter what. Thats right, completely expendable.

After she delivers, thats another few months of running also being completely expendable. You all are responsible for removing possibly up to 6 months from my training. So you know what I think of this thread? You could have easily kept your mouth shut Rundaddy, easily, but you just had to do it. You just had too. So thanks, thanks alot and have a wonderful day.
