A friend told me that Brian Sell got hit by a tree during the Gate River run. He said that he had about 40 cuts on his arm and face. I wondered if anyone else heard or saw this?

Confirmed. Not a tree, but a branch from a tree with thorns, more of a palmetto branch. Pretty nasty.
This sounds like typical Brian Sell. No complaints, No excuses. How bad are the cuts?
my guess would be it would be on his right side. the way the wind was blowing. I dunno.
Would need to see a bloody mess before I believed it would have any affect on Brian Sell

I'm thinking most likely he ran into a tree, or through a tree's branches or something. I find it highly unlikely that a tree hit Brian Sell.
Wearing #49 in the race? Hopefully that number was requested by him, otherwise some serious disrespect for Brian Sell.
A whitecollar runner would have been smart enough to avoid the tree.
I heard Sell chopped down the offending tree with two quick swings of the razor-sharp iron handlebars of his moustache... Any confirmation on this?

You should have seen what happened to the tree.
Didn't happen during the race, but between the finish and awards ceremony, he worked a half shift at the local Home Depot garden dept., and a tree blew over on him then ;-)
If I got hit by a tree I wish it was this one

Yeah, let's not get silly here. He "collided" with a tree.
I had a kid get hit by a tree branch after he pushed it out of the way and it swang back cracking him in the ribs early in the AAU JO XC Meet years ago in Hagerstown,MD on a Golf Course and he finished a painful 33rd instead of about 5th or 6th.
Egad! HORrible commentary!

He said "swang."
Only God can make a tree... or Brian Sell
Good Call.
I saw the incident. Sell was about 10 yards behind the lead pack of Carlson, Browne, Bizuneh and Coolesat. The branch that hit him was bigger around than my leg and was about 8 feet long (no exageration). I thought that it knocked him out when it first hit him. 2 guys ran out from the curb to remove the branch because it took up a good portion of the road. It was wicked windy that whole section from 3 to 4 miles along the water. The waves were hitting hard against the seawall and splashing over the road.
I am not suprised that Brian would finish the race. I was curious if he is okay now?
