I remember watching Alyssa run her frosh year at state. think it was a 68 sec final lap in the 1500. hope this year she can get back up there.

Indoor......freshman......doubt it
if so though, shes Olympic bound (:-P)

Whomever said that it depends what state she is in, is correct. In California, 63 for the 400 won't get her on a decent high school's 4x400 team (and maybe not even on the "B" team). Its a good start, but as someone else pointed out, a lot can change for these girls as they mature.

A girl I know is a freshman and told me that she ran a 63.xx 400 after just two meets this season. That seems pretty fast for me unless she has some mad talent. Am I going crazy here or is that just an ok time for a HS freshman?
Frosh girls is a little different than boys, but without dealing with that right now, he's my two cents:
63-64 Decent
61-62 Good
59-60 Very Good
57-58 Outstanding
Under 56: World Beater!

Damn, that's fast. Did she become a world-class runner, or did she get injured or decide to quit? That's like sub-50 for a guy, and even Michael Johnson or Jeremy Wariner would have trouble running that without any training as a high school freshman.
FYI, my first 400 with no training was in 8th grade (got a 59). I also know two other guys who ran 56-57 for the 400 with no training in their freshman year. I later went on to run a 47.2 400, and those guys ran a 45.9 and a 46.2 for their lifetime bests.

If her name's not Sanya Richards, I'd go and measure that track again. Either that, or she was hiding some prior training from you.
Most HS runners are faster now.
Um, no. My HS had 100+ girls running track, and there were only 5 girls that could run 57 or better. Only two of them were freshman, and both of them have been training hard even before middle school.
And no, my HS track team didn't suck. The girl's 4x400 relay ran 3:46, which was enough to get second in our division
Well 63 is good, see how she develops. A talented girl can run that without a ton of work.
Last year i had 5 8th grade girls at 62.3h, 64.00, 64.01, 64.1relay, 64.53.
I also coached in PG county MD many years ago and had a frosh girl go 59.x and a soph go 55.7. A team we competed against (Central HS) had a frosh girl run 59.x for 400 hurdles.
So, depends on where you are coaching, in New England 60 sec. girls are considered good, down south just ok and Cali and texas they are jv.
Results from the Yale Invy just one meet but a decent sized one on a reasonably fast and banked track. Your friend would have been around 50th. Looks like the fast frosh of this meet award goes to Corrine Serrano from Colonie 60.43.

I'd agree it's good but not amazing. The good part is she did this on her 3rd meet and if she hasn't done much training there's potential to greatly improve that time.

The ME state record for the 400 outdoors is what? 57.17 (FAT) Right. The all time fastest girl in the history of the state!
Compare the all time fastest Maine girls runner in the 400 to Illinois last year. The last girl to make finals in 2007 had to run 57.94 (FAT). And how much more does that translate to Cali where the freaking state record is 50.74 (FAT).
So maybe you better rethink how good Maine is. yeah, 63 in the 400 is jack squat in some areas of the country.
Secondly, excuse me if I didn't go to the 100th of a second for times posted on a message board. Didn't think that .0000118 really mattered for the purposes of this discussion.
Finally, you're splitting hairs again between a few years ago and two years ago. Get over yourself.
When it comes to the 400, I know what I'm talking about.
That would have been really really good for my high school track team. The 4x4 went to state and I think the fastest runner was a 57, the others in the low 60s. I was an alternate at state for the 4x4 relay and I think my PR was 67.... I could place at Varsity meets but I wasn't the best. 400 is a hard race, it was the most nerve racking for anyone on my team because of how hard it feels on your body. Good for her! Hope she doesn't tire out. With good training she should still be able to peak late in the season.
2:00+ = out of shape (just plain bad)
1:40 - 2:00 = average female (untrained)
Under 1:29 = average female (untrained but at a decent weight)
Under 1:19 = female in decent shape
1:10-1:16 = female in good shape
1:04-1:10 = kinda fast (but mediocre on a team)
1:00-1:03 = pretty fast (top 20% of team)
0:56-0:59 = actually fast (competitive)
0:53-0:55 = exceptionally fast (extremely competitive)
0:49 - 0:52 = sensational (elite/approaching elite)
0:47 - 0:48 = untouchable (world best)

This is a good example of a good question for discussion. It was started in 2008 and with my post now has
only 36 responses (including he OP).

This thread was started in 2008! That is 11 years ago.
Good questions should get responses.
Politics, dating, criticism of star runners, etc., should be on a separate blog.
Have two of them on LRC. A good blog where you actually reward people for starting
an interesting discussion and a bad one where all the other ones go.
