The fastest I can find for this guy before was 3:41.6 outdoors in '07. He broke Symmonds' Dempsey record from last year, which btw was the fastest U.S. indoors last year...What's with this guy????

he's a thrower at my school???
His third lap was 56 or better, he just dropped everybody like he had just jumped onto the track:

just SICK.
congrats for steve, hes been working hard these last couple years, finally a real break out race for him. Hopefully it continues for him
graduated from saline high school outside ann arbor, michigan in 2000. 1:52/4:18 kind of guy. ran at michigan state university. http://msuspartans.cstv.com/sports/m-track/mtt/sherer_steve00.html according to the website, he was born in 1925, though.
how many meters is that track?
307m
He blew everybody up. WHO IS STEVE SHERER baby!
UW is a 300m track
A great thread. I didn't see it and had started my own thread entitled, "Who the hell is Steve Sherere?" But I'll delete that one and post what I asked earlier below:

The subject of my post is somewhat of a joke and meant as the ultimate compliment.
I see this guy ran a 3:56.00 mile today. Who the hell is he? Major props.
From doing some research, it looks like he was next to last one year at NCAA xc. Also ran 7:58-9in the 3k? PRs prior today were 1:47 and 3:41.
It just shows what hard work can do. Far too many guys just give it up.
I'm certainly going to interview this guy. If anyone knows Steve, please have him contact me.

Stats: 3000m Indoor All American at Michigan State, he beat Ryan Shay that year in one of the great 3000m races in college with 7:59.6, ran a double that year at indoor nationals with 6th in the mile and 14th in the 3,000 (little time between races). Note: Ran under one of the worst coaches in college history with Darrell Gatson.
Now, Sherer is training with the group from Ann Arbor that includes Willis when he is here training for track season. Just needed direction from a solid coach!
he ran it in half tights too...the guy has balls...no, really, you could see 'em....
We got a quick interview with him after the race. He coaches himself now... All I can say is WOW, he made 3:56 look easy. Also, I don't think anyone noticed that he rabbited the 3000 after the mile today...

Hope everyone enjoyed the "almost live" coverage today from UW. It was a complete blur to us... Can't wait until our event pages are done so everything will be easier to find.

Steve Sherer now joins Nathan Usher as those having break out performances from that group of MSU Spartans. It looked as if the last legacy would be Baker, Wehrman, and Jurcevich. Usher is 2:21 marathoner and ran the Trails. Steve and Nathan kept working hard to acheive that success! Congrats!
Ross;
Thanks for the coveerage! I had trouble getting download before this afternoon, but now all is well.
You're neck must ache from shooting straight down onto the south turn. Actually, your footage is better than being there: I can actually see the entire race unobstructed for a change!
If truly self-coached, Scherer must be one of the fastest such milers in the world. A very tough event to self-coach.
Props to Scherer. Had noticed him in the 800m last year.
Heard the same about the MSU coach from an athlete who had enough and transferred.
nice run by steve. dont think he was coached by gatson though. stintzi (coach at wisco now) was the distance coach back in steve's day.
I thought I was just ignorant during the mile b/c I knew most everyone else except the dude blasting off the front. Good to know I wasn\'t just retarded. Killer closing speed though, props to him. Oh, and I think he should have finished out the 3k, his face looked like it was his only race of the day!
He may have been coached by Stinzi but the mid distance was under the complete control of Gatson. If he was coached by Stinzi there would have been maybe 1 person he could train with in track. I believe he trained on his own under one of those coaches. Gatson blew up that program with disorganization and embarassing the athletes.

Well when did Walt Drenth arrive on the scene?
Also, Scherer's HS times seem out-of-wack:
1:52 800 great
15:30 cross country fine
4:23 mile not so good
Tremendous work ethic And character. Last name is SHERER NOT sCherer
