I split a 424 1600 leg on the DMR this afternoon...still a long way to go.

You're fast now!
I think you better modify your goal in 2009.
New/realistic goal:
1500 m - 4:11
This thread is over. Report back when you hit the above goal.
Great job Eddy... that's a significant jump from your low 4:30s the other week! Looking forward to the progress reports.
Nothing to report here. Just trying to stay away from the bugs... whole house has been sick. So far so good.
great job, eddy! that's a real breakthrough for you at 1600.
I did 3x200 w/u in 38,37,35, 2x600 in 1:43, 2 minutes rest, 1:47, 3x200 (80 rest)-34,33,32 last Tuesday. 600s were hard. I was still feeling effects of 2nd cold. I couldn't run much W-Fr (after 3-4 100 mile weeks) and drove 6 hrs to New York to race Saturday night. I felt like crap, dehydrated. But then the race started and
I ran 9:20.70 3k, a 12 second pr (had no splits along the way except 1600 in 4:59). My calves were trashed after that but I still ran a mile in 4:46.56 two hours later. I had nothing for the mile (69,2:22,3:35,4:11) but it was still disappointing to run only a second faster than in January. The next morning, Sunday, I ran a hilly road 5k in about 16:33, a 20 second road pr (5:24,5:26,5:13), but a lot slower than I might have run fresh. Afterwards, I ran another 15 miles with a backpack, to finish with 21.5 miles for the day and 78 for the week.
This was my only chance to race between February and April, but no, I wouldn't triple in 15 hours again. Calves are very sore today (14.3M easy tonight).
A 4:24 1600 is roughly equal to a 4:05 indoors.
My senior year of college, I ran a 4:05 indoors and 3:59 outdoors.
It can be done. Just keep it up.
Hello EddyLee,
I'm not quite up to reading through 53 pages of workouts, commentary and results. Perhaps you can just answer a few questions and save me the time of reading everything.
Just how close are you to achieving your goal of a sub 4 minute 1500? What are your PRs for 400,800,1500, mile, 3000, and 3200, or any other distance?
How old are you? Are you a student, if so, where?
Thanks.
quick training update:
sat:
5x 4 minutes on, 1 minute off
tues:
5x1200, 1 minute rest, 2x200
averaged around 3:50, 31s for the 2s. a little difficult towards the end.
mileage being a little more consistent. february was not grand in the scheme of things. looks like it's going to be longer reps for a while.
ps. awesome job eddy! at the least you're going to come very close to sub4, and expect to pick up your first sub2 800m with that. when's your first outdoor race? (i've got an entire month before i go again! which is both good and bad.)
Jonesy... congrats on a new 3K PR! Then to go and run a 4:46 mile. Good JOB! Impressive to follow that up with a 16:33 5K on the road. Make sure you're resting adequately. There's lots of stuff going around.
I'll be racing indoor this Sat. Planning on running the 800m and Mile. I've taken more days off recently. Seems I'm tired a lot lately. Still averaging around 60-65 miles/week.
My first open race for the 1500 is going to be in 2 weeks. I'm shooting for sub4:05, but I may be able to go a little faster if I stay healthy.
My roommate is going down to Cal Poly SLO for an open meet to get a mark for an invite we have in 3weeks. I may decide to go and run the mile, but I still have not made up my mind.
Everyone is looking good...
Jonesy, you're a freaking mad man lol...one hell of a weekend.
Good luck this weekend, Ron. Goals?? Sub 445?
you know, a lot of times i thought i "outraced" my workouts but maybe not if you ran 6x800 in 2:30 and ran 4:25.
back in the day i dropped 6x800m w/1 min recovery averaging around 2:19, and closing in 2:16.
i did get sick when i was supposed to be peaking, but only mustered 4:17 1600m and couldn't crack 15 minutes in my targeted race, the 5k.
this past fall i did 6x800m w/2min recovery averaging ~2:28 (and it was utter hell). didn't race a mile, but only TT'ed 4:45.
I'm aiming to run a 4:30-4:35. I hope to follow that up with an 800m below 2:05.. Who knows? It's a 300m track... Maybe I'll run even faster! Ridin' the rainbow!
hahaha. "ridin' the rainbow!" may not give quite the message you intended, ron. :)
good luck!
I am not sure how old some of you are, but my friend went to Master's Indoor Nationals five yrs ago and raced in the 35-39 category. He had seen results a yr earlier and noticed that the 800 was won in 1:59 or something.
So he became motivated to train for the next yr (as a 36-yr-old) and try to break 2:00. He has run since age 10 (34:59 10k in middle school, 1:54/4:20 in HS, limited college running) and can pick it up and stop with ease.
He also wanted to try to break 4:30 and I told him if he was going to travel and register for the Nationals he should race both -- 800 and 1600.
He ended up running a bunch of 2:00-2:01's and 4:10.xx for 1500 and some 4:30's miles.
He doubled at Nationals and won the mile (if it is a mile) easily in 4:35 or so and then he got second in 1:59 to some huge stud that has run 1:53-55 after age 30 ... he just hadn't been there the yr before.
So, my point is that if you are OVER-30 and can run sub-2:05/sub-4:40 you should check out the Masters Nationals. They are probably very soon.

Man, if you crack 4:00 I will poop my pants! As the rules specify, once you reach your goal, this thread will be deleted, or at least frozen. God damn kilogram! This is going to be awesome!
sun: Can't remember
Mon: Nada
Tue: Couldn't be bothered, stupid gym.
Wed: 27mins on grass. Foot got sore, had to stop.
Thur 52mins elliptical, 3.3 miles treadmill, slower than 7min/mile.
Fri: 32 min elliptical, 4.3miles treadmill, getting to 6:45 pace towards the end.
Sat: 34 mins elliptical, 7.2 miles treadmill, getting to 6:35-6:40 pace at end. (Progress, woo!)
Doing mostly intervals on the elliptical, 3mins on 1:15 off for 6-7 reps - not sure if it's keeping me in shape but it's bloody hard work, HR near 180!
I'm working by the logic that if I run my wimpy short little runs after some hard elliptical work, overall I'm getting an hour+ of decent aerobic work. Also, the foot is getting really well warmed up, which is good. Does this seem sensible?
So I'm a senior in high school, and my team recently folded due to a lack of funds at the school (and we only had 5 kids max ever). I'm definitely running in college, but I'm not sure where yet. Right now, I want to train hard, but have thought of a couple of options, and want others' opinions on them. Remember, I want to be in great shape for xc next year.
Option 1: Simple aerobic base training. Build to high mileage (I've been up to 90), and do workouts there, get ready for college xc.
Option 2: Train for a half marathon. If I do that, I'm not sure whether I should just train hard and do 2 workouts a week, or follow a plan (I've been looking at the Hansons plan with added mileage, ofr follow a different one).
Option 3: Train for a marathon. Same questions as option 2.
Option 4: Any other ideas?
If you train for a marathon you will be killing guys at 8 and 10k XC in college. But the marathon training should be at least 80 miles a week.
Last week I ran around 5:55 in the 1600 race. I'm running the 3200 and I really want to go under 12:30. I think the 3200 is my better event.
What are some strategies? How fast should I go out... even splits, or start out slower and go faster? Thanks
I've been a runner for 15 yrs and I'm 27 yrs old. I probably run - on average - 25 mpw (about 5 miles p/day 5 x p/ week) but I"m looking to increase my mileage.
Anyway, I have been the same weight for the past 10 yrs, I'm 5'5 and I weigh 128 lbs. My weight has fluctuated 2-3 lbs every so often, but I always end up back at 128. I know this isn't a serious problem, but I'd like to get down to the early 120s. Also, my legs tend to be more muscular than the rest of my body so I'm looking to slim those down as well.
Any advice on how I can get thinner? 128 is probably a healthy weight for me and I eat healthy 3-4 days p/ week and the other days I eat whatever I want. I don't touch junk food like cakes, pastries or chips b/c I odn't like them but 2-3 days p/week I'll indulge on pizza, pasta, mac/cheese, fries, stuff like that.
Aside from watching my diet 7 days p/week does anyone recommend any other exercises besides running that will help me lose some extra lbs?

Running for Bowerman Track Club used to be cool now its embarrassing
Hats off to my dad. He just ran a 1:42 Half Marathon and turns 75 in 2 months!
