This morning my achilles(spelling) was bothering me a little during the warmup. So, I skipped the speed workout, and I did the school course(5k). I'm going to go see the trainer this afternoon around 1ish before practice with my coach. I hope nothing is too badly informed. It hurts to walk a little...it feel like it is being stretched. FINGERS Xed! |

A) I can't believe that a University coach is this stupid. B) You don't need any special formula or any secret training to break 4:00 when you are 20 years old. I thought you were a Canadian high-schooler because you ran the 1500 and you hadn't broken 4:10 and you had really screwed up training. C) It is not your fault that your training is so bad, but realize that if you are planning on reaching your best (whether that is sub-3:50, sub-4:00 or sub-5:00) in May or June, training like this in December and January is riCOCKulous. Seriously, nobody does intervals twice a day for days on end. Not only is it counterproductive, but few people can physically or mentally handle it for very long. I am sorry for you that your coach is a twat. I hope you succeed in spite of him, but I am not holding my breath. |

10/1 AM: 30mins real easy PM: 2mi WU/CD, 4x1k Avg 3.13 with 1.30 recovery,1.30 recovery then 4x500 avg 1.28(70 Pace) with 1min recovery. Very pleased with this session as those recoveries were very short and it feels good to run at 5k pace then pick it up to sub-3k. Hamstring feels tight this morning though. eddylee, I think you should discuss what you're doing with your coach, if you realize it's counter-productive I don't see why you should be forced to do it. |

SHe taped me up, and I went on an easy 6mile run. ---- 1/11 AM-0 PM-6 I got my achilles taped again. It feels the same, but I am taking this weekend very easily. --- 1/12 AM-0 I might go for a run later tonight at the gym. I am getting of work right now, and my achilles is feeling a little bit better while walking around. If I do go to the gym, I will do an easy 5-6 and some upper body weights. |

Young man, your coach is a fool based on the training you are posting. That achilles problem should tell you both something. |

eddylee, you're not doing all those intervals in spikes are you? that would really be tough on the achilles. 11/1 - 7 miles steady 12/1 - 4xmile with 2.30 recovery. 5.30,5.35,5.30,5.45 - done in a muddy field with slight rolling hills so times not indicative. 13/1 - 7 miles steady. Total week mileage - 45-50, bit low I'll be posting once a week from now on to make it easier for anyone who wants to to follow. |

I am sure that he knows that my achilles and my teammate’s shins are the cause of the enormous amount of stress (mainly track sessions) on our legs. He plans to back off a lot during this week due to our first meet this Saturday in Flagstaff. |

[quote]liff wrote: eddylee, you're not doing all those intervals in spikes are you? that would really be tough on the achilles. quote] I am doing the afternoon sessions in spikes, and the morning stuff in trainers. I might actually switch to flats instead of spikes all together and leave only the spikes for races. |

I'd just do the sessions in trainers if I were you, the benefit of possibly not getting injured probably far outweighs any slight benefit training in spikes so much might offer. |

Be very careful with the achilles. I have had a lot of problems with it. When it would first start up, the achilles would only hurt for the first 3 to 5 minutes in a run, then I would not feel it. But as the season went on it would only get worse, it would swell up twice it's size, I could barely walk, and when I finally would take time off to heal it, it would be so screwed up that it took 2 to 3 months before there was no pain. My advice, back off now while you are still in the base phase of your training. Take a couple days off. Ice, ultrasound, etc. Once you feel no pain do some ecentric calf raises for a couple days, then get back to running and continue the calf raises. This will not have a big impact on you reaching your goal if done now. However, letting this achilles problem continue will affect you entire season. Why ruin a whole season, and potentially the whole summer to run workouts in January when all you have to do is take a couple days off to prevent it. |

If you read any of the previous pages, then you would see why I do the certain workouts. I know that I need to do 12+long runs, etc. I have a coach, and he assigns me what to do. I would have gone 12+ on Saturday, but I was being careful due my achilles. |

Bah. I'm east coast - doubt I'll be anywhere near any of those meets. Good luck this weekend, though - I think I'm running 4x8 on Friday at the Armory in NYC. First day back on my college campus for me. Had a pretty solid workout with our team: Warmup + cooldown 35 minutes, 4.5 miles 5x1000 with 2 minutes rest: 2:59, 3:02, 3:04, 3:03, 3:02 I wasn't straining much, either. |
