Hi... while at university in 1992 I was able to run a 3:57 1500m. Due to a variety of circumstances, I left competitive running for 15+ years. I had no idea what I achieved. I'm 36 now and wish I could do it all over again because I believe I could have run faster. Eddy... stay focused. Take some time to just run for the enjoyment of running. You're young and the next 5+ years are going to be your best running years you will ever have. Don't throw away the opportunity.

Sometimes quitting is correct if your coach is killing your chances at improvement. But maybe the other approach, doing the workouts you want to do while seeming to follow the coach, is another way of approaching things.

solo, good luck with the triple. stay loose between those races. could you get equal information on the anemia from the blood test and one race, say, the 3200?

first solid track session in a while. my heart's not been in it for a week or so, some outside issues affecting things.

16min warmup
3 x 200 (30) 400 (60) 200, 7 mins rec
10 min cooldown

heavy wind at the track - 20 mph. first 2 with the wind, second 2 against.

29 60 30
30 61 29
30 60 30

The third set I took quite a bit more rest - 15, I think. I needed it - my arms were lead after the second set.

sooo.....was all alone in the 800m. went through 600m in 1:31, decided to back off for the 3200m that was 5 minutes later. finished in 2:05

and then a storm moved in and they canceled the rest of the meet. but i did NOT feel good. need to start taking my iron supplement tonight, because test results say that i have anemia

I also got checked out for anemia because I had most of the causes. The conclusion is that I do indeed have anemia. I am taking an iron supplement as well. My running load is going to be down for a little bit. Which in my mind is fine because we have midterms this week.

well, I've seen eddy's results this season, so not really played. two distance runners with anemia? that's not too unlikely either. as I understand it, the body absorbs iron better from foods, especially red meat (steaks), than from supplements. so get on down to Peter Luger's or whatnot in your area. it has to be cool to know that fixing iron intake, over the long haul, will significantly or even radically improve your times.

tuesday 14
wednesday 14.5 9's and 8's out, 7:20's back until close in 6:49/5:47. just didn't have it today. maybe a good porterhouse would help.

Also make sure you're getting plenty of vitamin C (apparently aids iron absorption) and cut down on caffeine (apparently inhibits iron absorption).

Good to know what the problem is, in both your cases - now you can go about fixing it! And given that you're both running reasonably well with anemia, sky's the limit when you're healthy.

Oh and pumpkin seeds are cheap, and full of iron if you can't afford steak dinners every night.

My training:

Sun: 20min Xtrainer, 47 min treadmill, time to test the ankle - kept upping the pace, eventually got to 10.5mph, no problems! Had just upped it to 11mph when gym closed and I got kicked out. 13 min jog outside afterwards. Still not great at real running. Quads annihilated, blisters, oh the joy of getting back.

Mon: 50min elliptical (7.07 miles supposedly, 30 mins treadmill 6:31 pace, upping gradient from 1 to 3 over course of run). Quads absolutely trashed after last 2 days.
pm: 41mins elliptical.

Tue: Day off - quads need a day off running too sore for elliptical/bike.
Wed: 37min elliptical, treadmill 30min steady (6:40 pace, gradient 3.5-4%), 23min progressive (start 9mph-6:40 pace, increase pace .1 every minute, last 5 mins 10.6mph-10.7mph, all 3.0%gradient), 1.5mile cd.
Not bad! I think.
PM: 26 min easy on grass. Foot still not great with 'real running', bit sore.

Well done on your race, boingo, if you can run 4:04 leading, in that kind of heat, you're surely capable of much faster.

not with 7 minutes recovery...

jonesy you are running too many slow miles if you really want to break 4.

I would like to hope it's a sub-4 kind of session. I've never been good at that sort of high-intensity work; I'm not really sure what that's indicative of, other than that I was not born to be an 800m runner. (Which was surprisingly my focus in high school...)

I'm a much better runner when I run even splits, starting near the back of the pack and working my way up the entire time. I think I'll have a much better shot at under 4 this weekend, and my coach seems to think so too - he's seeded me at 3:58. The meet we're going to is the one where I first caught the 1500m disease - going from 4:27 to 4:13 in one rather stupendous race.

I hope you both can get your iron issues sorted out. I've heard anemia can be one thing that makes running just zero amounts of fun, compared to the immensely rewarding activity it should be.

that makes one thing on which I agree with your coach. (i.e. not the lack of 1200-2k stuff and not the lack of hard tempos and not the amount of tripling!). I was just throwing a number out there based on the fact that boingo ran 4:04 recently and improved significantly for this session, I think. sub-4, you're definitely right on the number of slow miles. I am still building base and my first goal is to take down my pr's at higher distances, starting with the half marathon in ten days and then 10k and down right after that. I try to run most of my non-workout miles in 7 or under and a good deal are 6:30 or under, and this is at altitude. But there are days where I just don't have it. What I think is my biggest weakness vis a vis the 1500m right now has to do with the lack of fast workouts at mile and down. Those are improving, so at the least I am expecting some pr's at mile and down in a month or so. I joined this thread because my pr's are close to what eddy reported at the beginning of the thread.

What makes this far more difficult is that I ran my track pr's (4:39 mile, 16:20 5k) indoors as a college soph in 1989, was then injured for fifteen years, couldn't run more than a mile until 2004, couldn't even walk normally upstairs until this past summer, and was able to get above forty miles per week only a year and a half ago. I ran 13 pr's last year, at 3k, 4 mile, 5 mile, 10k track and roads, 10M, 15k, half marathon, marathon, so I have reason to hope that I can turn back the clock for another year and destroy my college self at mile and 5k. 4:00's obviously a pipe dream, but it's not unreasonable to envision moving down below 4:20, the more the better, and breaking 16.

thursday 17 4 w/stroller early. p.m. 13 w/2x2M on golf course in 12:29/12:05 (2:30 rest) and 10x150m hills. real tempo work is tomorrow. despite a big steak for lunch, didn't have too much in the tank today.

friday 13M
noon 3 slow on grass.
mid-afternoon 10 w/6M solo tempo in 35:54 (5:59/M).
5:51,6:08,6:25 (18:24=6:08/M), 6:03, 5:56, 5:31 (17:30=5:50/M). pleased with close. I ran a 4.1M tempo under 6 here before the shin splints, but this is my first tempo under 6 since and it's longer. could have probably run faster w/others but team was nowhere in sight. felt strong after the turnaround. the green chile burgers and steak are paying off.

didn't end up running at the meet today. i went, warmed up a little as soon as we got there, and after about five minutes my right foot was the source of excruciating pain. i tried stretching, icing, and taking 3 motrin - all to no avail. i've had tendonitis in my feet for a while, and that's maybe a 4-5 on a scale of 10 painfulness. this was probably a 9. it's the area between the heel and the knob of bone that starts your little toe's metatarsal bone. it hurts when i walk, which doesn't bode well. the movement that really triggers it is when i flex the outside of the foot upwards (pronation, i guess). anyone have any experience with something like this?

i really will not be pleased if i have to call off the end of my senior season.
