In response to the question:
"What is it that makes people think that drinking large quantities of alcohol / getting drunk / both is somehow clever / funny / special / manly / notable."
The answer to this is actually very complex. Apart from the normal brain/liver damage caused by the ethanol, acetyl aldehyde, and acetic acid circulated through the body as a result of ethanol contact with alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), ethanol (the alcohol form found in such beverages as PBR) can undergo a different reaction with an entirely different enzyme. Ethanol will bind allosterically to 1,3-dimethyl 2-chloro 2-trans pent-4-one synthase (DMC transpentonase),which is commonly found in the pancreas to change the conformation of the active site so that it may synthesize DMC transpentone. DMC transpentone is then moved through the bloodstream to the sweat glands in the armpits. The apocrine nature of these glands (secretes sweat by detatching vesicles full of sweat and other compounds as opposed to just by secretion through the membrane) allows the DMC transpentone to pass through the epithelial layers out of the body. DMC transpentone acts as a pheromone that can stimulate the "sex drive" of a female and can act as a signal of dominance to a male. Thus since attracting women and setting a standard of respect and dominance is manly, the consumption of alcohol can lead to manliness. I hope this helps to further your understanding.
Keep that DMC transpentone flowing Ziggy. Enjoy yourself and be safe.

BeerAdvocate has it at 4.74% abv and Wikipedia has 4.73% in most markets ("Verified by phone call to Pabst Brewing Company on November 13, 2007.") I've seen it listed at 5.0% or 4.9% as well.

the PBR is official. Let's leave it at that.

I'm sick of hearing about somebody's uncles cousins friend of a friend who drank 100 beers in a day and set the world record for the marathon that same day all while having sex with a girl and doing laundry at the same time.

this kid is clearly doing something very difficult and everyone should give him the credit he deserves even if it is unhealthy or "an American beer"

You guys are pathetically immature.

I don't know what is more sad, the fool doing this or the "groupies" whooping the whole thing up.

Binge drinking is stupid. Binge drinking for 7 consecutive days is very stupid.

I pity you and your groupies. I hope you all grow up at some point.

First off, I am hungover just thinking about this.

But second, what is appealing about this is the challenge. It is going to hurt. It is going beyond what most of us would feel comfortable doing. It is perhaps even beyond what many of us are phycially capable of doing. Yet this young man is putting himself out there, risking public failure, accepting pain, to attempt this feat: to reach beyond the bonds of our frail human existence to show that Man is indeed capable of more. Much as Man has climbed Everest simply "because it was there", plumbed the depths of our deepest seas, or reached beyond this earthly sphere to float above the moon in a tin can, this warrior is showing the rest us of that we can do more, that we can be more, that there is hope for this, at times, pathetic and vile race. While we toil in our cubes, or study diligently for our gold stars, this man is not asking "why", he is saying "why not". Few of us may ever be elevated above the crowd, or exceed the norm, but when one of our own transcends human limits it inspires the rest of us to at least try. In that trying lies the essence of what makes our species superior to all others in this vast galaxy. You sir would do well to try a little harder.

I have to add one amazing story that happened in the summer of 2002.

For 4 weeks Rick Fuller camped out at Paulina Lake (about 6400 ft elev) in his trailer and averaged 27 miles per day while he drank 150 PBR 16 oz cans which is the equivalent of 200 PBR 12 oz cans.

During this time he also painted 2 houses in Bend. He also drank more beer in Bend, but didn't count that in his total.

Good job Ricky!

Ziggy's out on a run right now. He'll resume drinking shortly. As for myself, I am about to start a final, so I'll try to get some updates in later tonight. Perhaps if someone else on my team is with Ziggy he will be so kind as to keep me apprised of the beer count for the night. It's going to be a long final in the computer lab for me....

FYI - Ziggy is way ahead on mileage and just 6 beers behind pace. It seems more and more likely that this will be at least a 100/100 week. Perhaps a 120/100. These last days will be the hardest, so keep the positive reinforcement coming.

from inference he would be at approx.

37 Beers (100/7 x 3 -6) from urxc's post above, prior to tonight;
51.5 Miles (120/7 x 3) again from above post prior to tonight.

Anything after "Ziggy's" exam is the great unknown.

The count is currently 73miles, 42 beers. 4 beers with dinner. 8 miles this morning, 8 miles this afternoon. One final exam at 5:00, "a solid B. I haven't been to class since the mid-term and didn't begin studying until today at 12:30." He will begin the beers shortly.

Why is it that in Canada PBR is sold as a strong beer (5.9%), yet in America it is apparently much weaker?

hahahaha.

oh, and to the individual who said something about multiple posters under the same name:
I'm not saying it doesnt happen (or isnt here) as I embarassingly admit to the same crime. However, I know for a fact (recognizing names) that a few were my friends from California. I have no idea what college Ziggy goes to, but I know these responses were not shameless self promotion. They were supportive responses.

With that said:
I think that talk of 120 miles is a little excessive. Just cuz he is on the "pace" doesnt mean he will feel as good in the next two days as he has in the past two. I think this is good to get out fast and give him some breathing room to catch up on his drinking in the end (when he is feeling particularly shitty).

Go Ziggy.

Who says the dude is getting wasted???? There is health risks in just walking across the road to each there own. Iheard somewhere That Toshiko Seko use to pound 10-12 beers after hard training runs. He was so f***ed over he couldn't eat so he just had beer. People say moderation, but if this is true? is a guy who works 18 hrs aday sick???? as this is far above the norm?? You know 80% of society consume far more food then they need each day is this right. Guy here in North America everyone has there vices. If the thread is so f***ed why the hell are you reading it??? Learned along time agoif you don;t have anything good to say about someone its just best to keep your mouth shut cause bro I bet in the bacl closet of life you more likely got some nasty shit maybe I wouldn't agree with. If you think its stupid then why the f*** did you open the thread up and waste time on it?.
