What is he talking about? Making it to Nationals? There is no national qualifying mark in the half marathon. What a bunch of crap[/quote]

I'm sure he's referring to the giving up a spot to the Nationals part, not whether or not he raced and won the Davis Stampede...

Are you? Or are you him?
Because the name he used "doubter" suggests that he is doubting his abilities like many others have done on the various threads regarding his accomplishment or lack thereof.
Im assuming there is no drug testing for PED's in high school?
If these times are done on talent alone. He is an outlier of many magnitudes. A Physical Futant.

I'm pretty sure that is what "doubter" thought (and I am not he/she).

Based upon his assertion that "there is no qualifying mark...", preceeded by "Making it to Nationals?", leads me to my belief.
Why would someone doubt something that could be easily verified with Yahoo or Google?

The second pronounciation (like German Silva, etc). It's one thing for someone with no connection to Hispanic culture to mispronounce it like that (iut of pure ignorance, sure) but it's another for Rich Gonzalez to do so.
I'll bet you don't say anything about the pure ignorance shown by hispanics who constantly mispronounce words in English.

Umm, my guess is that maybe he was referring to the 1500?

Not every prep Californian in prep xc history has run this course.
There was no true state meet for XC in CA up through the 70's. It's a safe bet someone like Hulst for example would have run faster than Davis or Fernandez. Fernandez's real ability won't be measured until he gets on the track where real men sort things out.
word. but there should be no doubt, if he stays healthy and fit, that he should be able to run under 14:00 for 5000m. whether he runs faster than ritz' 13:44 or rupp's prep-record 13:37 is a quest of glory and a slightly different story, but this is a runner who ran 15:14 on the woodward park course as a sophomore.

The new Mt.Sac course is 2.91 and it's an 18 to 20 second conversion.

http://dyestatcal.com/rank/xc2005/October/31MtSACAllTime.htmThat converts the old course time to a 14:14 on the new course
Nelson didn't start until his Soph. year, and sat out most of his junior year.
Sorry for the confusion; I meant to say 2.91 for the new course, but 2.95 from the old course slipped into my mind. I was doing the previous post all off memory, but from running this course (new) about 12 times, I can say that the conversion is correct, but I would give directly about 17 seconds, if I remember. As to Jeff Nelson, he was doing 110 mile weeks his senior year, even if he started late. I agree with the valid point that Hulst, etc did not run on this course, but I have to say that looking at most anyone to come through CA history, they would be hard-pressed to run 14:24 at Woodward. Finally, the track is where things really come out and Rupp's 13:37 is going to be a tough number to handle, even for someone of German's status. I wouldn't be surprised though, if he just continued on with the regular season as opposed to getting in some fancy races with pros like Rupp, Ritz, and Nelson did--he just doesn't seem like that kind of runner to me. Cali track season is long enough. We may never have a solid track 5k time to compare him. It's safe to say though, that if he has the race that he did at Woodward at Balboa, no one is going to beat him.
After reading this thread, imagine if this kid had some guidance at the high school level. Man, what a disservice! At least it's not too late, but man, the wonderment.

I'm not really sure what you are talking about.
If you mean that he had bad coaching, you are wrong. Bruce Edwards has been one of the best coaches in the Sac Joaquin Section for years. I would say that Walt Lange of Jesuit and Dan King of Del Campo are really the only ones that can claim more long term success than him. I think that it is fitting that Coach Edwards got to work with German in his final season before retirement (he has said before that he was hanging it up, so we may see him in the future).
If you mean that he didn't have more guidance and encouragement for running from his parents, then you may have a point. I met his family at the state meet. They were friendly and engaging, offerning me and one of my athletes food and drinks, but I really don't think that they had any idea how good he is. His cousin pulled me aside and asked if there would be anybody close to him in the race, sounding unsure whether German would even win.
When he first started running, he dad discouraged it. I don't even think that his dad believed how well he was doing as a freshman. This is not a slight against his family. Rather it is a reflection of the differing levels of value placed on sports, and running in particular by immigrant families in our area. I fight this battle year in and year out with some of my most talented athletes. Their parents either discourage participation or outright forbid them to go to meets on weekends. Often times they see more value in working than in sports. I coached two brothers who worked 5-7 farmers markets per week during the summer. With the money they made, they helped their family pay off their home. They were great kids, both enrolled in AP classes and both in the top 3 of their graduationg classes. They were 16:30-10:10-4:30 type kids who worked rather than trained every weekend and all through the summer. Could they have been much better if they had committed to training? Probably. Would that committment have ended up in them better people? No.
This really leads into a whole different discussion that people who don't work with immigrants or immigrants children (especially those from Latin America) would not understand and would be a good topic for another thread.

My guess is that you are a troll, but note that the San Joaquin Valley is not on the coast -- it might be 100-200 miles to a good place to surf, depending on where he lives, which is not quite walking distance.
If German can break 14 minutes then so will Chris Derrick!!
you guys are dooshes you wont answer my question!
Chris Derrick coming!!!! Illinois(Derrick) is going to stop the German invasion!!
I hope you're not Derrick. Based on what you just wrote, I'd guess your SAT score is probably in the triple digits.

German only beat Hasay by 1:29 seconds at the West Regionals! She's a beast! I believe Hasay will break the footlocker record next weekend! Could German be alittle overrated? I better Derrick's SAT is twice as high as Germans too. Must suck to be the second best runner in the country and can't get into any schools DIV I b/c his grades and test scores!!! Plus he's 19 yrs old soon! Does that makes Derrick 2 years younger then German? Listen to Derrick talk then listen to German talk, who would y want for a teammate? A smart, total team player or German a injury pron athlete that will need lots a tutoring in class that might not be there for all 4 years. Six days till Footlocker Nationals, I can't wait!!!
So much of what you wrote is wrong. Derrick is very smart, German is only 17.

Mark Coogan says that if you could only do 3 workouts as a 1500m runner you should do these
Red Bull (who sponsors Mondo) calls Mondo the pole vaulting Usain Bolt. Is that a fair comparison?
