Ryan Shay -not the most talented of U.S. runners, but one of the hardest workers and one of the runners who got the most out of himself. Some people thought he looked more like a wrestler, than an elite runner, and Ryan could have probably excelled in several sports, but we, in the running fraternity are priviledged to have known and watched Ryan throughout his career. He was a very accessible person, and would talk with all runners.
When he ran just over 28:00 for 10.000 last summer, I was astonished that he had achieved that result, and knowing his aptitude for distance races, thought that the new found track speed would help him in the marathon. I truly believe that Ryan surpassed his intrinsic ability when he ran that time, and there are not many athletes who can do that. It would be like Abdi running a 26:30 10.000.
Ryan was always happy to represent the U.S. in a variety of races throughout the globe, and always gave 110%- I have never known Ryan to drop out of a race. He was as tough as nails.
A true All American has left us. May he rest in peace, and condolences to his family.
