Great bands you just don't get

Paul Whiteman - the King of Jazz. Never got that band!

How did he get to be the 'king of jazz'? Stop me if I'm wrong, but isn't Paul Whiteman more of a Big Band sound? I mean, forget about Rhapsody in Blue and the Rhythm Boys and all that.

When you go into the Jazz section at Sam Goody or Colony or even those crappy cd departments at Borders or Barnes & Noble, you don't see any Paul Whiteman there. (And I don't think it's just 'cause he's a caucasian named White Man. Although they do have a definite bias in favor of negro jazz in the Jazz record sections.)

In fact, if you see Paul Whiteman anywhere, they've probably got him in the Oldies bin!

to say you don't get the beatles is a very bold statement

if anyone produced a wide range of music it was the beatles...

they did all different sorts of music, much of it fantastic, especially for when it was written

They look like girls, in those high-heeled boots. In fact I heard a rumour that's what they are. Three sisters, and Ringo is their mother.

And they stole all their sound from Elvis Presley, who stole it from colored R&B musicians, who stole it from the Eskimos who stole it from the Greenland Norse before they killed them all six hundred years ago. How derivative can you get!

This is EXACTLY what I'm talking about. McCartney says that these lyrics are very emotional:

To me, they're just simple, easy lyrics, sung in the typical sing-songy Beach Boys way. When people call these "emotional", I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. Obviously people should take Sir Paul's word over mine, but I still just don't get it.

following in that respect i would say joe satriani. people say that his technical ability demands respect, but i say until he learns that it's not necessary to put a million notes into every song he will always be crap. i dont have to respect him just because he's a freak show, i'll respect him when he writes good music. i guess this is more of a rant than a "great band" i just don't get.

walter, you're taking this thread WAY too personally. There's no explanation for personal taste - not even yours. You don't have to like his/her taste, but that doesn't make it "bad."

The only people with BAD musical taste are anyone who's paid to hear Yoko Ono "sing."

The song is soppy and sing-songy to me, too. Heartfelt, yes. Deeply emotional IF you don't have much dynamic range emotionally. For example, if you're a manic-depressive you might find the emotions of the song very shallow.

Problem here is...isn't Brian Wilson a manic-depressive? And if so, why is the song so relatively flat emotionally? Could it reflect strangled emotions of someone trying to act normal and keep himself under control? Like the sentiments in the second stanza? Could be.

Not trying to excuse the stunted emotions, just trying to understand them.

Fine by me if you want to join in the "savant poseur" Tom Waits bandwagon.

It is you who makes an ass out of himself, my opinion and experience is certainly no less valid than yours. As a musician who has studied classical and contemporary composition in some depth, I don't find your insecurities particularly threatening.

To each his own, really.

I don't get why people like Maroon 5. Those guys are the most boring prettyboy fratrockers that ever lived.

I never really liked Maroon 5, but I saw one of their concerts on TV the other night and I was blown away by the blandness. Those guys looked bored to f***ing death. And not in the way that Slash looks bored because he's cooler than a polar ice cap. The way that someone looks bored because they are completely uninspired and soulless.

I'm sorry if you like Maroon 5, but I just don't get it.
