I remember shortly after breaking the record, Davis got his time tattooed on his arm. I thought it was odd as usually when an athlete is hot, they are confident they could better their record. I suppose since the record stood for nearly 20 years and it isn't raced that often among elites he was confident it would stand. I wonder how he felt when BK broke it just a few years later.
Sidebar - Frank Shorter held the American indoor 2 mile record (1971) @ 8:26.
Also in February of 1985 Doug Padilla ran 8:15 indoors on a banked 120 yard track in San Dan Diego.

I know for a fact that he felt like a stupid fool.

A banked indoor 120yd track? Probably a 200m/220yd track. 120yd banked would be some very tight curves.

I think the San Diego Sports Arena/ Jack-in-the-Box Invitational track was an 11 laps (160yd) to-the-mile banked track. It did have some very tight curves.

Think Dan Lincoln came pretty close with an 8:13.
Teg is underrated. Broke the record by a good bit.
