Thus for a marathoner, fast long-runs are better then slow long-runs provided you are physically prepared.
does this have to do with the size principal? so if you are at a certain intensity and fatigue sets in, other fibers will not be recruited to take up the slack because the intensity is not high enough?

A few summarizing points and thoughts:
1) Long runs do not cause fast twitch fibers to be recruited any more than a short run at the same pace.
This assumes that there is no fatigue on either run.
As soon as the fibres you are recruiting begin to fatigue increasingly more effort will be required to maintain the same pace. This increase in effort is an increase in motoneuronal drive that results in recruitment of increasingly larger motor units. Provided the effort reaches high enough levels, 'fast twitch' fibres will be recruited (for most muscles all motor units are recruited by force levels of 60-90% maximum. Any increase in force on top of this is through rate coding).
So for two runs at the same pace the longer run will result in more recruitment of fast twitch fibres than the shorter run.
You act like this is set in stone.. ... It's just a theory...
You say slow twitch can't turn into fast twitch? You're wrong.. I'm 36 years old.. Started out as a distance runner.. Now only do 100 and below.. Weight went from 210 to 232 once i stopped doing that stupid 400 ...
Yet i'm now faster at a heavier bodyweight in the 35 yard dash and 100 meter dash.... and at 36 i'm getting records naturally in the gym and track..
You say they can't switch into fast twitch? I'll force them to switch into fast twitch.... It's really not that hard to do... Anyone can do it..
You act like your statement is set into stone before the universe even began..
It's not..
