Are you kidding? Acosta couldn't get within 50m of Kiprop. Not now, not ever. Don't get me wrong, Acosta's good, real good, but he won't be world-class. I say he'll probably be a 3:35 guy at his best, in a dogfight to make WC and Olympic teams. Kiprop, on the other hand, has a very bright future ahead of him. As long as he doesn't burn out early like other great young Kenyans in the past. That would suck. PS what people don't tend to realize is that in North America, for every footlocker champ who runs 3:40 low or whatever in HS and gets singled out and touted as the next great one, there are at least a half dozen kids across the country (and a even a few up north) who are just as fast and talented. It's unfair that one kid should get all the hype a la Acosta when there is a strong group that are equally talented and promsing. Unless you're Alan Webb, HS is just too early to tell which of these prodigies burn out and which ones go on to become world-beaters. |

I think he was joking with the AJ Acosta comment... |

No doubts about the kids talent, but he is so dam tall, and his stride is so long. I would think it would be real tough for him to maneuver in tight packs and not get tripped up a lot in races. Just a thought |

I know he (Asbel Kiprop) is African, just like Hicham El G, Nordenni Morcelli and Said Aoiuta are. But from a different African country. |

The kid is obviously a talent... but what Kenyans have done well in the middle distances over an extended period of time? Also, his PR is 3:35.xx. He's raced very well in championships, don't get me wrong, but you need to run FAST to rule an event (world championships only happen every two years... Golden League meets that go sub-3:31 to win happen several times a year). He's young, so we'll see where it goes. Maybe there will be the Obea Moore effect. |

If he runs a 1500m this month or September in which the winner goes sub-3:31, I'm sure he'll run at least sub-3:32. |

How tall is Kiprop? 6 foot 8? Tower of Kenyan power is what my friend's ex wife used to say back when we all worked at this grocery store that specialized in organic whole foods. Those were the good old days. Sigh. |

What's 3:35 equal to for a mile? 3:53-ish? Hmmm... I wouldn't say this guy's got Webb's number just yet. Could make for some great races over the next 10 years though, that's for sure. |

Kiprop is great but really not consistent to be an lal time great at moment. Last year he ran great in one race at the end of the season and then a few days later (or maybe it was a few days before), I can't recall the meets, he was an also run. Yes, he's won some of the big ones over the past few seasons, but he loses quite a few races too. The same thing this last week. He runs an amazing 3:29 in Doha and then a week later runs 1:47.97 to finish 7th in a mediocre 800m!! Doesn't make sense to me. |
