http://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/08/sports/othersports/08track.html?ex=1315368000&en=a56651a12ac2a08c&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss This NYT article says that the rate of false A-positives for EPO (as determined by B-negatives) was about 1 in 1000 in 2005. That's a tiny rate, but not surprising since the exact same methodology is used in A and B tests. This is not how A and B tests are typically done in medicine (e.g. for HIV, at least early on, in which the relatively cheap A test was used for screening and the expensive B test was used for much better precision). I was interested to read that there were nearly 4000 positive tests for EPO in 2005. Does that seem high to others? It is also worth noting that A-samples were less reliable in 2003, when Lagat failed his test. |

ADIL KAOUCH IS RUNNING THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS, HEARD YESTERDAY FROM A FRIEND IN THE MOROCCAN FEDERATION SO WHO DO YOU GUYS THINK WILL WIN IT SINCE HE IS BACK? |

Well, if an anonymous friend heard it from an unnamed source, and you, an anonymous poster, reported it to us WITH EMPHASIS, I will assume that it's true. So, to answer your question, I like Webb. |

On one hand, there's been nothing on the IAAF website about Kaouch's suspension, which I find kind of odd. On the other, he wasn't mentioned at all in the preview of the mid-distance results they just put up, which he surely would have been if he was running. |

I think it's proper for them to wait for the results of the B-sample before commenting. It's odd that the news went out on the news wires. If the leak didn't come from Kaouch himself, that seems unethical. But maybe there's a good reason to make a provisional suspension public/semi-public. Anyone know what the standard procedure is? |

A french paper reported Kaouch's suspension lifted! |

Confirmed by an unnamed French newspaper. I told you it was true. |

Regarding the NYT report that 4000 of 180,000 samples were positive for EPO in 2005, could that really be true? One in forty-five samples positive? That would be incredible. Especially considering that athletes who don't use EPO should account for a disproportionate number of the tests (since dopers stop getting tested after they are banned). That would mean that the ratio of positive athletes is considerably higher than the ratio of positive tests. And the prevailing wisdom is that it's easy to avoid detection?! |

Not true as far as I know. |

Once they are banned, I assume that they aren't racing in WADA-regulated events. Under what circumstances would they continue to send samples to WADA? |

geez people, learn to read. it says that 3900+ samples tested positive.....for SOMETHING, not for epo.

Any official confirmation? any more news? |

He is included in the provisional entries list the IAAF just put out, not that that necessarily means he's running. |

I think it's safe to assume that it will appear on Google News immediately in the unlikely event that his B sample turns out to be negative. |
