The USATF junior olympics will be held at MT. SAC and I am taking one of my athletes out there. Anyone know of some good spots out there to get a some decent runs in?

i grew up in the hills by mt. sac. if you want hills training, the street name is grand ave.
Go to Grand/Hillside. Park there and if youre facing up the hill stay on the right side. there is a trail there that is about 3 miles to the top.
There is also a trail on the left side too that goes alot farther than right side.
If you can drive, hop onto the 10 west then the 57 north and get off at Bonelli Park. There are trails all throughout that park that are safe a pretty self explanatory.
if you want soft and relatively flat training, go onto the mt. sac xc course and go to the far side of the "valley loop". it will take you off the course and there is a nice trail going through a park through homes. you will cross the street and continue on that trail. unless you want to do 8-9 miles, my suggestion would be to turn around after 3 and to run back. =)

57 south
exit lambert, head east about 1.5 miles. park in the neighborhood on one of the streets across from Carbon Canyon Regional Park. cruise east through there, almost like you're heading out of it...because you will be. enter Chino Hills State Park. excellent trails. after you cross the bridge, the trail uphill to the left is difficult, about 4 miles up. the one to the right is also uphill...but moderate. it has an uphill grade for about 6.5 miles.
ritz and eduardo ran there in '03 after they raced at mt sac for their long run with some friends of mine. they ran about 10 flat or so for the first 2 miles, then took off (this is on the hill to the right). they kept goin and goin. after a while, my homeboys turned around and finished at the intersection. about 10 minutes later (about 90 minutes time elapsed) they take a right and go up the big hill, the one i mentioned earlier. they go up for about 10 then come back down. when they finished they said, "wow, that hill is really hard!"
was glad to know that i did most of my collegiate long runs on a hill that ritz and eduardo said "was really hard"
The trail that goes behind valley loop is nice, but the back side does get pretty hilly. I would also run the cross course, just so you can give the experience of switchbacks, poopout, and resivoir. It is a phenomenal course.
MTSAC trails are boring. Take the other posters advice, drive 15 minutes and hit up carbon canyon park off lambert. and you can run a marathon back there with no street traffic; just you and a canyon
