I emailed Dean yesterday on his website (http://www.ultramarathonman.com/flash/contact.php) and asked him whether it really was him who posted earlier on the thread.
I'll let you know when I get a response.

Touche.Sorry I got Sam's name wrong, and I apologize to Sam if he saw it. I have no problems with Dean, and don't know him from Adam. If he is a cool guy, I am all the happier for him. If he isn't, I wish him all the best in finding a path to be one.My only point is if you don't like him, giving the time of day only feeds marketing the machine.Did not mean to pit Sam against Dean, just saying it irked me that he went so unnoticed that someone who did notice couldn't even remember his name correctly (finger directly pointed at me).
In John L. Parkers book runners and other dreamers, he has a great essay about Jim Fixx titled Smoke and Mirrors. Whenever I hear Dean Karnazes name I can not help but think back to John L. Parkers essay.
Although I'm sure Dean may be nice it is absurd to think America is listening to this guy for inspiration on their running and fitness. This is a guy who would stand on a podium with the world's elite runners and take question after question and give groups of joggers advice on running, while the quiet-often introverted-elite athlete sits back and laughs.
I just came across this article when I did a google search of Dean Karnazes
http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/15.01/ultraman.html?pg=1&topic=ultraman&topic_set=
.
In this article he gives advice on running like don't eat fruit, and sleep less. Personally I hope people continue to go to people like Amby Burfoot for their advice. These guys at least were elite athletes and have a good understanding of the sport.

10.) PROMOTE THE HELL OUT OF YOURSELF
At least he's honest.
Im a pretty damn fast d1 grad. f*** whoever doesnt believe me, and f*** your mothers too. but i will offer an open challenge to Dean; any event, any day, you f***ing fraud. or better yet, race anyone of substance, you c***.
haha..tonight you sit by your computer whining and bitching while he is at the ESPY's....

Thats exactly why it is definately a good troll and not Dean K. The troll wanted to seem believable so he didnt say something like "I know Im a publicity whore..." That would not be believable.
There's your learning experience, Oldguy einstein. Damn I wish I could play you in poker.
Oh, I see, the Dean Karnazes imposter was a brilliant troll. And the purpose of his post was, what, to trick us into thinking he was Dean? How clever.
poser... you knows what I'm talking about too, biotch. Know who you are...
Did Dean ever respond?
NOW HOLD ON A MINUTE. i do admire dean, and i wanted to find out the truth so i started this thread. but for someone to bash him like that is on a whole other level, even for letsrun. even if he is doing for the money and fame, so what? (i believe he isnt, and it definitely didnt start that way) what about him makes you that angry? i mean, he admitted he's not the best, but he's still pretty bloody good. and like other people have been saying, yes he makes good cash, but he is turning over people to running, a sport that sometimes i think this message board does negative things for. even if he becomes a really rich guy, the fact that he's turning people on to running and inspiring is pretty damn good, and more than i can say for you, sir, who has nothing to show but a large large problem with someone he doesnt even know.
zed, great words. nice to see someone else saying something nice for a change.

Wow, Dean thanks! I talked with you once at the SF marathon and I'm also very inspired by you. Keep doing what you're doing!
What a loser.

False. DK is a mediocre runner at best
Your opinion is what really counts.
Guys it really was me.

No, its pretty typical for letsrun.
Hold on a minute? Ok, I'm holding on. I'm waiting for Dean to respond to my question. He blames the press for falsely making him out to be the greatest, yet he doesn't correct them when they do. He's had many chances to do this and each time he falls short and does the same thing: He lets the mythological caption stand or he responds to the fawning interviewer egotistically that he's slept on the run or ordered pizza or run 300 miles straight or some such ah-shucks/Evel Karnevel nonsense.
Am I angry? Yep. I am. We have an American man break the American 1/2-Marathon record and we get nothing--no ESPY award for him, no coverage but a sad byline in the sports section of the local paper located next to the picture of the fat, dopey man proudly holding up his fat fish. We have Deena, an Olympic bronze medalist and the first American woman to go sub 2:20 sitting in front of a non-existant book signing line. (It happened.)
Finally, we have Dean. America knows him, yes they do. They know him because, unlike Hall and Kastor, he's had a plan--a plan not to run a fast marathon or beat someone, rather, a plan to become a famous, narcissistic icon...a plan to sell himself, his book, and his sponsor's drink and NRG bars...a plan to become a sideshow and live the American dream in true P.T. Barnum fashion....a plan to rope stupid cattle into a corral with a teary story and a charitable wink.
You have nothing better to do with your life than be angry at some guy you don't know because he's more successful than you.
How truly sad.
For you. Not for him. I'm sure he's loving every minute.
Of course, you don't sound particularly intelligent, so I doubt this'll get through. If you honestly believe Karnazes woke up one morning and decided he'd start training a couple hundred miles a week, then run ridiculous distances for days at a time ... as a means of fulfilling a "plan to become a famous, narcissistic icon" ... well, you're even dumber than you sound. Did that honestly make sense to you when you wrote it?
There are a lot of much easier ways to find fame and fortune. Karnazes obviously did something for the love of it, then found a way to market it. Good for him.
Sad for people like you who actually get "angry" about it.
Amusing for me, though.

Troll.
To the guy bashing Dean, I agree. And after his diabolical plan to become famous and end american distance running, I've heard he's getting into the blood diamond business. That whole North Korea thing? Dean at it again.
Wow - talk about complete mis-directed anger huh?!?
Listen big guy, I agree w/ you 100% that the likes of Deena, Hall, etc... should get more coverage than it does - but the tie you make that guys like DK are to blame is friggin ridiculous. You act like DK should make an effort to tell people that he's not as good as they think he is. You know what, most of us have superiors or subordinants that think we're A LOT better than we are and if you think for a minute that we all should set the record straight intentionally - man you're more nuts than your post alludes to.
