He's getting there.
He's getting there.
This is an outstanding result for Webb, who never really showed great 800 speed. It is pretty close to the A standard for the 800.
You know Webb could run 3:32 or under this week. This is good news indeed. If Holman could run a 3:31 there is absolutely no resaon Webb can't. Remember, Webb is one of a handful of American's that have broken 3:50 for the mile. For some reason that insecure feeling you get about Webb is not evident this past few weeks.
Look for Lukezic to run fast in Europe this year. I think he may go under 3:34 again pretty soon.

I used to expect him to blow up and seeing a good race from him was out of the norm. I'm hoping those days are behind him. Paris will tell us a lot.
what a difference a mentor like lagat makes....
Steve Scott ran 1:45.05 the year he set his AR in the mile so Webb is close!
1) 1:47 in high school (negative split) is really showing great 800 speed.
2) Holman ran 1:44
This is really good, though.
Could the record AR fall this year. When Scott set the record ET was in theaters and MASH was still on in primetime. Hopefully, Webb will set the first American mile record of the internet age.
i've run with [nick] symmonds before (48. open 400) - webb's top end speed (47s) is better.
that said, webb can run 1:43-44 with a bit of fine tuning.
i can't believe that baala opened his season with a 3:31...drugs, man. just like before - this time he's hoping he ain't gonna get caught.
no way in hell baala is talented enough to open with that kind of time. el g didn't even do that.
Yeah, why do people keep saying that AW doesn't have great speed, when the guy ran 1:47 in high school? How many American high schoolers have run 1:47?
A handful? The dude has always had serious wheels.
He just needs to add confidence and experience, which will come as he continues to mature and to race the European circuit. Remember, he's still a young miler by world class standards.
Don't be surprised if from now on people begin to talk about what a great kicker he is!

Really?
1998
3:31.19 1 APM Hengelo 1 Jun
1999
3:31.34 1 Milano 9 Jun
2001
3:49.92 1 Pre Eugene OR 27 May
Sure looks like some 3:31 season openers to me.
And is Webb on drugs for opening with a 3:51 in April?
still not as fast as willis, but hey not bad.

You better believe, symmonds can go faster than 48 now...that was college stuff, and webb's is a relay split.
Of course, Holman didn't run this in high school....

From Track and Field News top 10 HS list:
800 METERS
1:46.45 Michael Granville (Bell Gardens, California) 96
1:46.58 George Kersh (Pearl, Mississippi) 87
1:47.31 Pete Richardson (Berkeley, California) 81
1:47.74 Alan Webb (South Lakes, Reston, Virginia) 01
1:47.9+ Dale Scott (El Cerrito, California) 72
1:48.09 Doug Herron (Bartlett, Anchorage, Alaska) 85
1:48.20 Jeff West (Crenshaw, Los Angeles, California) 79
1:48.21 Jonathan Johnson (Abilene, Texas) 01
1:48.2+ Richard Joyce (Sierra, Whittier, California) 65
1:48.3+ Dave Ayoub (Central, Peoria, Illinois) 77
the relay split was to a poster saying that webb has better 400m speed than symmonds. Stating that symmonds PB is 48 and that webbs is 47 (which he ran on a relay).

i wonder if willis brings that up every time he loses to webb head-to-head, or when he's watching from the stands as webb runs in the finals of the world championships. but hey- willis has a COMMONWEALTH title! that's... not bad. i guess.

i think NOT!
Baala did not take drugs.
He is one of the hardest working and most talented middle distance runners in the World.
Remember he almost beat El Guerouj in the W.C. in Paris (2003).
Ghost
Some perspective?
Jim Ryun ran 1:44.9--for *yards*, so he would have run the 800 in ~1:44.2--about two hours after having run a 1:51-ish heat in the same event.
Now *those* are wheels. Forty-plus years ago, by the way.

The same could be said about Webb in the Olypics(lost in first round while willis advanced to the semis)...Webb will have good years, willis will have good years. Both are about equal. Willis has faster 800 and 1500 prs but only by a little. Webb has a faster mile pr which is equivelent to the fastest 1500 between them.
So it's almost trivial to debate who's better right now. When willis and webb are both healthy they are both damn good. This year will probably belong to Webb...but Willis looked decent coming off his injury. It should be an exciting year for both of them. Too bad Michael East has basically disapeered.
