I guess it's just the pitfalls of following the sport for a year or two and not following how the sport works. High school records can be set after graduation until the first day of freshman classes in the fall. If you're not sure how the sport works, maybe you shouldn't be on here insisting that you know it all.

so are you saying we should disregard webb's 3:53 b/c it was run at the Pre Classic in June??[/quote]

No, the Pre Classic was in May in 2001.

Hey guys,

this was a big issue when Rupp was going after the HS 5k record and as it turns out, the offical rule is that you have until August 31st after you graduate HS until you are no longer a HS athlete

There is no such thing as an "official rule" period.

It might not be an official rule but it's what the 'stat keepers' use while trying to track records (pun intended).

My question is, what if you should break any said HS record on Aug 30th and you started your first day of college on Aug 29th or before. You're before the Aug 31 deadline but you are also now an official college freshman - does the record still count as a HS record?

Stat Keepers please respond.

So Sorenson's time won't count because there is someone under 40 in the race.

Race starts at 10:30. Thunderstorms here presently, but it looks like they should be clear by race time. Hopefully it will cool things off a little - it's currently low 80s and very sticky.

High School Seniors finish at different times around the country and as far as record keeping goes, the high school season does last through Aug. 31st after your senior year.
If a time is run after beginning classes at a University but before 8/31, I believe the rule states that you are no longer considered a prep.
Anyways, Good Luck Matt!!!

The Washington State Prep Mile record was set by Gerry Lingren in mid-August after his senior year (4:01.5) in a race in Jamaica and it is considered the state record.

Now that is the incredible, especially for the time period. I bet the track wasn't so great either. How much did he beat the next guy by?
