To play devils advocate:
- Is this guy showing there are ways athletes can try to present a good business argument for sponsoring them that many people in the sport are not yet thinking of? Some guys seem to have a view that I've run X therefore give me £Y, without thinking 'What's in it for the sponsor? How can I sell myself.'
- Will he help people understand how good you have to be to make the Olympics or what different times really mean. When I was training for a marathon I got asked by someone who should have known the sport whether I was aiming for close to 2hr 12min (champs qualifying). When I said 'no' they then asked if I was going for sub-3. No concept of anything between.
- Will he help the sport gain coverage in that huge void between those running 2hr 10min and those running in a gorilla suit? Who in the UK knows about the guys running 2hr 15min to 2hr 20min? (Or quicker) If this guy gets coverage some of these guys could get a slice of the limelight and a bit of the credit due.
- He's already had success on Letsrun. We're talking about him and his athletic credentials. It's Big Brother/I'm a celebrity but based on how fast he can run a marathon - not eating cockroaches or being a freak in a house with TV cameras everywhere.
