Actually, by being able to chime in here, you have unwittingly demonstrated the internet does have its drawbacks.

Sir Prance Alot, Kenya didn't have a distance running problem before the internet....the USA sure as shinola did....people hear how they need to train off of the boards. You probably didn't know who malmo or hodgie san were.... information from guys like Jtupper or JK have been invaluable resources to many. Would Kenya be better? I don't know. Maybe. But the fact remains that the internet has provided info that wasn't out there....well, it was out there but not readily available. Many guys were training but the 90s were a virtual graveyard for distance runners save Kennedy, Williams, and a handful of others.

Hall is the American "mystery man"; you never know what you will get with him. He should have much better PR's at 5k and below, but seems to struggle at times in the lower distances. Hopefully has found his nitch!! He seems like a very nice person.

Yeah it was funny how after Hall's half marathon AR, people were predicting sub 13 and 27 for him this summer.....

How could they make any predictions at all? Halls plans were clearly to ramp up for the marathon trials in the fall.

According to the IAAF Scoring Tables,

Ryan Hall's 59:43 = 1266 pts.

Michael Johnson's 19.32 = 1335 pts.

Michael Johnson's 43.18 = 1300 pts.

Maurice Greene's 9.79 = 1293 pts.

A 59:43 Half Marathon is "equal" in pts. to the following performances:

100- 9.86
200- 19.75
400- 43.69
800- 1:41.89
1500- 3:28.54
Mile- 3:45.11
3000- 7:25.87
3000 Steeple - 7:59.27
5000- 12:47.58
10000- 26:42.14
Marathon- 2:05:23

I'm a bit skeptical of the middle distance times... However, according to IAAF, Ryan Hall's was the best USA long distance performance ever.

I don't care about the scoring tables, anyone who is a student of t&f has to know that Hall's half marathon does not come close to the performances you listed. Road races can not be fairly compared to a track race. Until someone draws lanes in a road, no one can say for sure exactly what distance Ryan ran. I would compare Adbi run in Philadelphia and the NY half to Ryan's run, which is great, but saying it is equal to a 1:41.89 800 is ridiculas.

Ryan is a very good runner, who ran a great time in one race, but until he runs a sub 27 10,000 or a 2:06 marathon; I am not going to put him in the category you are putting him in. The half marathon is just starting to gain popularity, util the last couple of years most people ran halfs as a tune up for a marathon, they ran to win and to set course records. Athletes are just starting to attack it for time, that's why the WR has been lowered 3 times in the last 2 years.

Now, with all that said, 59:43 is smoking and it maybe on the books for a while.

Does anybody really care if Hall, Meb or Abdi runs 13:10 for a 5km anymore?

They have all really shifted their focus to the marathon. IT DOES NOT MATTER what these guys do for 1500-10,000 meters at this point. The marathon is a totally different ballgame due to the different physiological demands.

Look at Pete Gilmore. I don't think that he has run under 28:30 (correct me if I am wrong) but his 2:12 at Boston and 2:13 at NYC were very special.
