This is what happens when you choose to change countries for financial gains. People should live together in harmony....as long as they pay me enough to live there!

I think the guy didn't even think through the political repercussions of his actions.

To him, he simply thought that he was in Kenya and that what he'd do while Kenyan-with respect to Israel would simply be carried over to a gulf state.

Since he is no prodigal son, he should just go back and resume his life.

I'm not sure if he thought it through or not, but I wouldn't be surprised if he hadn't because it's kind of a bizarre thing. I guess it's possible he was trying to make a statement, but somehow I doubt it. Will Kenya be willing to take him back now? Or now that he's changed citizenship are they going to make it hard for him to regain it? Will he have to go to Switzerland for a while?

The head of the Israeli Athletics Federation has stated that were Muchero to have a problem returning to Kenya, Israel should offer him citizenship. Of course, the Israeli Athletics Federation doesn't get to decide these things but rather, the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Still an interesting comment though.

I met Leonard Mucheru at the 2002 Crescent City Classic in New Orleans. He impressed me as a very peaceful, humble warrior.

This whole episode of losing citizenship over a marathon, and a very successful one at that, is extremely disgusting and inhumane.

I agree it's ridiculous but don't forget it's illegal for a bahraini citizen to visit israel. So he broke the laws of his land, that's why his citizenship was revoked. He also broke it in a very visible way so they could hardly claim not to have noticed.

It's stupid but it's the same as an american competing in Cuba. You're breaking the law of your land, even if it is a pretty stupid law.

There are too many countries out there with laws banning citizens from visitng other countries. I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of letsrunners live in one of them.

yes were he a brand new new citizen, the Homeland Security Admimistration would have a judge strip him of it and deport him to his homeland. Lawful residents and citizens have been held in jail for years just being suspected of ties to terrorism.People's homes wwere broken into by dea and property seized again based on suspicion.Man wake up. If the US were to do that, it would be just as wrong as what is happening to poor Leonard. If anything we need more athletic/cultural events to bring us together, not more laws to keep us apart.

Debating the war on drugs/terror belongs on anpther thread but making certain drugs illegal and others not seems pretty abritary. Alchohol and cigarettes are much worse for you than marijuana, should they be illegal too? Prohibition doesn't work.

I won't even start on Shrub's war on terror b.s. You have a much better chance to be hit by lightning than to be injured by a terrorist attack. Just fear mongoring for political purposes.

No, he'd maintain his citizenship, but he would be subject to prosecution. Do you doubt it? Read anything about Bobby Fisher, (sp?) the chess player who has been wanted by American authorities for the last twenty or so years for the high crime of playing chess in some communist country where Americans were then prohibitted from carrying on business.

I dont know how old you are, but I am rather confident that if it was 1950, you would have no problem with the rules against blacks in the USA. Why? Well because its the law.

quozl did not claim Bahrain's stripping of Mucheru's citizenship as morally exemplary. He/she just pointed out what Bahrain's law is. Mucheru chose to become a citizen of that nation. So it was the law of his land, by his own choice......

Try reading his statement again. Now repeat two or three more times...Ready? He provided nothing but factual information. He didn't endores the laws or even say that they should be followed. He simply said they exist in many countries and they were broken in this case.
