Still feet of snow on the ground, and more snow on the way tonight! It is January and cold, that snow ain't going nowhere!

what happens if it snows a foot the night before the race? Would they just have to suck it up and run in it? Would they try to clear off the course?
I guess theres not much they can do about it. It's winter..It snowed close to 30 inches in NYC the weekend before the nationals last year but warm weather during the week managed to melt basically all of it.
They claim to have snow-clearing equipment to use on the course if there's snow, but that golf course has been completely covered with snow for weeks now, they haven't even bothered clearing it off for people to golf on the days when it's in the 50s or above. If the snow comes down during the races at a ratelike it did during that blizzard two weeks ago, I don't see how they could possibly keep the course reasonably clear. They did run nationals on snow in Indy, too. Good prep for running worlds in coastal Kenya.
i think it'll be sweet if they have to run in the snow, i've had one xc race in the snow and i have never had more fun. the times were slow, but it was a blast
After both major storms, the Boulder Creek Path was cleared within a day or two. I'm pretty sure they could do the same thing with the XC course. And the likelihood of another storm of that magnitude hitting Boulder in the day or two before XC is about 1%, if that. We get a storm like that about once every 3 years.
It would be much harder to clear an entire course to play golf on relative to how difficult it would be to clear a ten foot strip around a golf course to a degree that people could run on it.

That's because the municipal services are responsible for it. Boulder taxpayers don't pay for crews to clear grass.
Very doable though, especially considering that I'm guessing the course will be using loops. As long as the golf course gave the ok, it wouldn't be too difficult to make an adequate plowed path. Yeah, it'll take some time, but Boulder should have the resources to get it done.

Yeah, I'm aware of that, but my guess is that the organization committee has a contract with some snow removal company, just in case. And even if they didn't, the Boulder Road Runners and other sponsors could probably round up a quad with a plow blade on it and clear the course in a couple hours.
The snow this year is getting ridiculous. This storm was supposed to be pretty small, but it's hit pretty hard and they keep adjusting the expected snow fall amounts up.
IT'S CROSS COUNTRY you bunch of babys! If it were easy everyone would do it. I hope its snowing, 1ft of snow on the ground, windy, & 20 degrees. Then we will see how tough the runners are.
As Letsrun.com is one of our official sponsors, I'm going to try and respond to viable message board concerns and questions regarding the 2007 USA Cross Country Championships that are coming to Boulder on February 10th.
In regards to the snow, it is true that we seem to be buried in the stuff lately. It’s been nearly a record snowfall for the last four weeks and it has been making the running difficult at best.
Although February is actually the second driest moth of the year in Boulder, we have a contingency plan in place in the event of snow. We do have it built into our contract with the city that all reasonable efforts will be made to clear the snow from the course, spectator and parking areas. Granted, if we get a blizzard like storm, city snow plows will concentrate their first efforts on clearing public byways and emergency routes first. We have also secured the date with a private snow plow company to further our efforts. In addition, the golf course has its own fleet of snow removal equipment and is prepared to use it. In fact, they will be plowing the course early next week (once the snow stops falling) to facilitate the drying process.
We look forward to seeing you in Boulder,
Pete Julian
I told you guys Julian would be on top of this sh!t.
you realize that you are agreeing with me?

You have to deal with whatever Mother Nature throws at you. I say if it snows, don't bother plowing. Hell, they should throw in a a couple stream crossings. I'll be there. I'm all set. I've got my set of one inch long spikes and a roll of duct tape.
"Can you play Poker" - you may get your wish.

You'd be stupid to play even those odds this winter.
just because it was hella wintery in december doesn't mean it will be like that in february.

It sure as hell could mean that! An exceptionally snowy winter usually means that there is above average snowfall each month of the season. The weather doesn't keep a calendar so that it can switch up for the month that it's supposed to be drier and tamer. This is a hard winter for the Boulder area, it could be seen coming back in the summer and fall, and that trend isn't likely to break just to please the ostriches and the pollyannas.
What do you think, it is going to melt? Haha! At best it will melt daily only to freeze again at night to make a 2 inch layer of ice. PJ and others are correct with regards to being worried about this. Boulder received yet another foot of snow today. *Typically* there is not snow on the ground in Jan and Feb because there typically isn't any snow in those months and only a little in Dec. Boulder has received over 4 feet of snow in the last 3 1/2 weeks. Past performance does not predict future results, but if the recent month has been any indicator, chances are that Boulder will get more snow in Jan and race organizers should plan accordingly. This is precisely why there are only a handful of road races around Denver during the winter and this is also why there are no big events between October and March. I applaud the Boulder folks for bringing such an awesome event to Colorado, but weather is a big gamble in CO.
