All these talks about running a marathon a day (DK) made me think about the amazing journey of Terry Fox.
I cannot think of a tougher man.

Yeah, and Terry Fox did a marathon a day for 143days. Oh and he only had one leg.

And he was Canadian! How did he ever overcome such obstacles?
I await the bashing from north of the border ....

Check with the border patrol, you official welcome into Canada's been revoked.
I know you're just goofing around, but for real, I invite anyone to walk into a bar in Canada somewhere, anywhere, and speak ill about Terry. Lemme know in advance so I can arrange to get the carnage filmed.
Terry Fox was a pretty unassuming guy, but he's become our largest national hero. You can have your Eisenhowers, Kennedys, Washingtons, Lincolns and such, and we'll keep our Terry.

As well as having a William Lyon MacKenzie King...was he a huge Canadian hero, how so?
Mr. N.R.B.P., if you are out there in cyberland, I wouldn't choose a politician for a national hero!!

Terry Fox I think did all he could in getting the fight against cancer started!
A true hero in every sense of the word.
makes your cherish what you got huh?
I was probably 8 when I saw the Terry Fox story on HBO. He has been an inspiration and a present conscious in my life since that young date. What a badass! I still think of him over 20 years later. Thanks for the inspiration, Terry. They should show the Terry Fox Story on HBO again and again.
hard to hold in tears watching that video on the front page (which i assume is the video in this thread, but I didn't look).
it spread...and now ive got cancer in my long...we've gotta go home.

Even more so!!
its a fall annual tradition for towns to put on terry fox runs to raise funds for cancer, all across canada.. I hear there are other places where that has caught on....
but yeah, terry fox was pretty amazing...
did anyone catch the segment about him when the cbc had the greatest canadian poll? sookyin presented and I thought it was pretty good
The Terry Fox story is so appealing because it is so very real in a world where so much is staged and phony. And Dean K is a prime example of that troubling aspect of the modern world.
Wejo,
Thanks for putting that where we could all see it.

Here's the top ten list that came out of that fairly extensive semi-sorta-scientific popularity contest/poll:
1 Tommy Douglas - former western premier, father of Canadian health care system
2 Terry Fox - the MAN
3 Pierre Elliott Trudeau - former Prime Minister, repatriated the constitution from Britian, divided the country over Quebec and oil, captured either the imagination or the ire (everyone had a strong opinion) of all Canadians
4 Sir Frederick Banting - disvovered insulin
5 David Suzuki - environmentalist
6 Lester B. Pearson - former PM, inventor of the Peacekeeping concept
7 Don Cherry - hockey commentator, former coach, expresses the voice of the common Canadian very bluntly in hockey matters
8 Sir John A. Macdonald - first PM, largely responsible for the creating of Canada in 1867
9 Alexander Graham Bell - inventor of the telephone
10 Wayne Gretzky - the Great One
The Americans reading this will have no idea who a lot of these people are, so I added some commentary beside the names. You can get a real good idea about Canada's national character by looking at that list. It seems we value things like health care, the environment, our country, and hockey. Some people might put hockey higher in the list :-)
on a can.cult. sidenote.... has anyone seen the new neil young movie?
I'm kinda not in the country right now but its showing in my locale so I was kinda curious about that...
bump
Wow, honestly wow. If you do anything today WATCH THIS VIDEO!!!
It makes me feel like such a pussy for turning around early because I was feeling tired or something. I new of Terry Fox, but nothing about him...and certainly not that he ran 3300 miles in 140days with one leg and Cancer.
