From what I heard, had he stayed up there during the last 1000, they would have beat Princeton. Given that, it appears they ran even better than most are giving them credit for!
I think everyone's giving them credit for running a great race. The guy you're talking about was Columbia's #130 who according to the official splits was 20th at 5k but who dropped back to 49th at the finish, a more spectacular crash was #156 from Dartmouth who went from 15th to 66th! On the other hand there were a number of runners who ran strong finishes, Col #136, 46->19, PU #201, 30->17, BU #113, 27->16. At the 5k mark Columbia were challenging but were still in 2nd place.
