My 10 yr. old daughter has been diagnosed as mildly ADHD, twice by two different docs. I'm still not sure-- she seems to fall within what I recall as normal for a fourth grader-- albeit for a boy rather than a girl. For example, by the end of the day, she is unable to sit still and literally needs to bounce around a field or a gym for a couple of hours before being able to do her homework. Of course, I'm no expert...
We've tried the non-medicative routes-- she gets tons of exercise and we've started Omega-3 pills-- but the docs and her teachers recommend the drugs because her academics are "suffering" and she is "not performing up to her ability." As far as I can tell, this means that she does exceptionally well in math but piss poor on things like memorizing the names of the continents. Her teachers also say that she becomes a distraction every afternoon...
Did anyone here grow up on Ritalin or a comparable drug? How'd it turn out?
