There were explicit instructions in the first post detailing how to apply. If you're serious, then get after it and quit wasting time with this board.

as a current college runner i am not in the position to join the group now, but i know myself and others were dissapointed to see the program fall apart last year. while you may not hear from us now, there are guys out there who are intrested and quite qualifyied to take advantage of the opportunity you present. please do all you can to keep the program alive.

I'm trying to only respond to relevant posts. Thank you for your comments Hardset, Honesty, and futureintrest (your spelling of interest). For someRunner - as Hardset says - go ahead and apply. Your times are good - it depends on how old you are, your potential and coaches comments, and other things.

To those who are "dreamers", if in doubt, then apply. We can only say "no".

So far, we're very pleased with the number of applications we have gotten and the quality of the runners.
question for Mike...

Mike, is this opportunity only for college graduates? I am female, 20, haven't finished school and am currently not in school, but am very interested and feel I have the potential. Would you consider me as a candidate, or do I have to have a degree?

We certainly don't want to encourage athletes to leave college early. We are looking for post collegiate athletes.

take into consideration post-collegiate means that you are done with school, not that you necessarily have a degree

club member's dues. most clubs have runners of all abilities and that money can add up quickly. unfortunately, if you think the club system is working wonders, guess again. a lot of clubs in europe have sagging membership and don't quite have the elites and developing elites that they did 15yrs ago.

True, that's what adds stability to any club system. If you spend all your time trying discourage "lesser" runners from joining your club, and then you want all the "greater" members of the club to have everything comped, at some point you have zero income and zero people to manage the club. That also means yhou have zero people doing the legwork to get sponsors, so you now have an "well known former" club.

Every competitive club has to have some elements to survive.

A) Some truely competitive runners that are willing to run for the club instead of for themselves.

B) Some hangers on that are possibly former members of group A or simply like being members of a competitive club. In either case, they pay dues and provide income.

C) A group of worker bees derived of group A and B that are willing to take on the tasks that are required to keep a club operating. They will also use the prospects of group A and B as propective markets to sponsors.

Clubs can survive A and C, B and C, but not A or B or C alone.

Do you offer a stipend? So athletes don't have to work?

u r right....when I ran for the SMTC in the mid 70's, this is how the club sponsored the travel budget for the 'good' runners. There were close to 100 members, who paid dues, supported the club thru various fund raisers, etc.

From what I hear, all of those Dr.'s , lawyers, businessmen, teachers, etc., who were members back then are gone due to dwindling membership of running clubs, overall, since the running boom starting dying in the mid 80's.

Mike, thanks for all you're doing. The running community can never have enough/too much support. Hope your running is going well and hope to see you at Carlsbad in the Spring.

Considering that "C" is about a 10-20 people tops in any given club, those are small clubs or you're way off base. I'll bet if you asked someone in those clubs you think are all "C" people, you'll find out about 10% of those people are really doing the work.
