Don't forget that Abdi also ran 27:22 at Hengelo in June. He's having an outstanding year and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him drop a bomb in the marathon. He and Ritz in NY would be great to watch. On the subject of Ritz and NY, does anyone know what Salazar's 10,000 PR was at the time he ran his 2:09:41 debut in NY? Just curious as to where he and Ritz stack up with Ritz going into NY for his debut. |

So Ritz is roughly 14 seconds ahead of where Salazar was at 10,000 when he debuted in 2:09:41 at around the same age. Not that it means all that much, but I was curious. Thanks. |

not an irrelevant stat at all. ritz is a lot like salazar and does better as he moves up. and ritz has 3 or 4 10,000s faster than salazar's when he ran 2:09. wouldn't surprise me if ritz did run faster than salazar's 2:09 debut time. his 10,000 is also comparable to to culpepper's who also debuted in 2:09. and abdi could go 2:07-2:08 on that course with ideal conditions and pacing. |

and quite a hottie back in the day, I might add. |

I hope you are not suggesting that Ritz has proven himself to be even remotely as mentally tough as Salazar. Its Salazar's mental toughness that made him so good in the marathon. Also remember that Bob Kennedy had way better 5k and 10k PR then Ritz and wasn't able to make the transition. There is alot of question marks in my mind about Ritz and the marathon. Its a long race and alot of pounding and Ritz hasn't proven to be the most durable guy around, regardless of what Hudson says. I'd like to see the kid do well but the comparisons to Salazar are premature. |

Close but no cigar (with apologies to Ms. Lewinsky). Kennedy is 18 secs faster than Ritz in the 5K, but I think Ritz has a faster PR in the 10K than Kennedy. |

And Kennedy only had a couple of attempts at 10,000 very late in his career (well past his 12:58 prime) didn't even attempt a marathon immediately before he retired. The marathon attempt was little more than a swan song. And I think Dathan is mentally extremely tough; it's physically where he's been fragile. |

...and Meb had the AR in the 10k when he debuted in 2:12. Alan |

Sure. As I said above, not sure that it means that much. Of course, Meb did go on to win Oly silver not long after that 2:12 debut. |

Because his last name is Williams, not Keflizighi or Abdihraman or Lagat or Tergat or Koech or Rono or some other African name. Guys with last names like Smith or Johnson or Brown or Williams don't get to hold US distance ARs. |

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, he may have had a chance to win it, but he followed a police car instead of the race motorcycle, possibly costing him the win. He was only 2 seconds off the winning time. |

I believe that Mark Curp holds the AR. |

1:00:55. 10K track best of 28:01. He ran the half marathon time on the very same Philadelphia course I might add. I also believe 1984 Olympic 10K bronze medalist Michael Musyoki was second....two seconds back if memory serves me correctly. Curp only a 10:00 HS 2 miler in Missouri, I believe. Please correct me if Im wrong. Mr. Curp was a late bloomer that also liked magnets all over his fridge. |
